Is there a conspiracy against CRT HDTVs?

I know that electronic stores use bright colorful images that look better on an LCD or Plasma than on a CRT, but I've noticed a trend that seems to go beyond that. All the CRT HDTVs I've looked at today have looked like total junk. I think it was how they were set up. Some where grainy when the LCD/Plasmas with the same source where perfectly clear. At another store the CRTs looked like they had a lower contrast ratio than the LCDs.

Are stores doing this to push more expensive merchandise? It is driving me crazy because it is impossible to see what the TV would look like under real conditions.

Because CRTs are "EVIL" and "Environmentally unfriendly" and "Not cool"

Of course, those of us who KNOW, know that CRTs facepwn all the other technology out there, and contain less hazardous material than, say, an LCD.

The difference in percieved environmental friendliness is that, in many places, you can freely landfill an LCD or plasma or whatever.... But you can't do that with a CRT.

That is an option, but it is a lot of trouble that I don't think I should have to go through. I think some are connected badly though because of the graininess, or the other possibility is that the source is grainy and that is the only TV sharp enough for it to matter. Although I would think it would show up on LCDs and plasmas in that case.

I personally just want to get my Oblivion on in high def as well as get OTA HD programming. I live in an area with a lot of ghosting and static because of mountains everywhere. If OTA HDTV works then we get a huge quality increase (if it doesn't then we are SOL or have to get an external antenna).

Because a typical big CRT TV contains about 20-30 pounds of toxic heavy metals, like lead. That's potentially more weight in toxins than an entire LCD TV.

digital tvs are getting so precise and source material so complex, that crts are losing in that category.

sure they have the best color and contrast, but some peopel will take detail over that

Nonsense! EyeMWing eats heavy metals on his Cheerios and suffers no ill effects!

I don't see any other rational conclusion when looking at perfectly set up LCDs and Plasmas and CRTs that look terrible. I guess it is possible that flat panels are easier to set up or have better factory presets.

Besides great picture quality and longevity, CRT TVs are great as a heat source in the winter, an often nececessary yet overlooked advantage. Certainly more exciting than staring at a fireplace. You can impress the ladies with your superman strength by moving your CRT up and down the stair, and you can forget those fancy excercise machines and miracle fat burning pills.

All of which is easily handled and reclaimed - unlike LCDs. The only "recycling" you get out of LCDs at the present time is reuse. So if the damn thing is busted, so much for that.

Trust me, stores don't really touch the settings. They get changed by everyone anyways, it's pointless. And the real reason alot of CRT's don't look good, is because most of them now are crap, no big manufacturers put much effort into CRTs anymore.

Actually, I may as well some days. I'll actually have meals with my hands coated in crushed neodynium, or after having handled busted-ass LCDs (mercury, mmm), or the innards of a CRT (tasty lead) or another assorted computer-related materials.

CRT TVs have contrast and brightness buttons on their front. LCDS and Plasmas sometimes do but often require using a remote to navigate a menu to adjust these settings. This leads people to play with crt tvs because they can but not lcd & plasmas as often because it's more work and requires getting a remote which they may not have on display.

I am firmly convince that almost all television sellers adjust the video controls based on what they make the most profit from.
Nowadays many of the crt hd's are indeed cr*p because they are being made that way. But a name brand that still cares, like Sony or Toshiba, make a crt hd that is really nice for a very low price compared to lcds/plasma/projection.
If you really want a crt insist on setting the controls yourself and see how nice they are.

I asked the people in Best Buy that, and they said that they only have so many HDTV cables, and they reserve them for their more profitable TVs.

They had a Sony XBR CRT HDTV that was hooked up to a conventional feed. As expected, it looked like crap.

If that is true then I guess it all makes sense.

Well current LCDs are brighter than CRTs. There is no conspiracy. That is how it just is.
