My wardrobe is atrocious. I need to update my clothes and i've been browsing nordstrom's website.

Holy crap some of that stuff is expensive:

I'm used to buying t-shirts for like 10-15 bucks and dress shirts for 20 bucks tops at dept stores. But of course dept. stores aren't that fashionable.

You guys know of any less expensive places than nordstrom's to get nice clothing?
 
JC Penny, Macy's...any of those places.

This reminds me, I need to start shopping for some summer clothes cause I dont have jack crap.
 
That's Nordstrom. They aren't targeting the mass market or those that are seeking value.

I think it is funny that they are trying to sell those Quiksilver LS T-shirts for $39.50. Pac-Sun and Zumiez sell the same kind of shirts for $24.50 or $29.50.

And what's with the "Evisu Genes Twin Koi Fish Hoody Sweatshirt" for $380? Perhaps I am pedestrian riff-raff but $380 is the most I'd spend on a 3-piece suit let alone a cotton sweatshirt.

Although some will argue, you can get some fashionable attire at TARGET from their Merona line.
 
Go out and actually shop.

You can find shops that have sales on and you can get very nice buys at big discounts 🙂.

Bough 2 t shirts for £35 that would have cost me £50-60 without the sale. A few pair of jeans for £60-75 that would have cost £110-130!

filene's basements or wait for stuff to go on sale. Only a fool will buy stuff at the full price-. Walk into a macys and you have a 50/50 change most of the store will be 10-40% off.

1. Purchase generic clothing for < $12 at Target or Wal-Mart
2. Take said clothing and apply diluted bleach to random areas to give a "faded, worn " effect
3. Take a knife and cut random holes in various locations and pull apart to expose textile fibers

congrats, you now have clothing that looks like you paid $90 for at GAP
 
Express has those types of T's on sale pretty frequently for $10-$15 and the dress shirts are $25-$35 most of the time.

You just have to hit the sales.
 
WTF A $380 Hooded Sweatshirt! I choked on my spit when I saw that! $38 for a t-shirt I was like, Meh overpriced Haynes, but DAMN, my entire wardrobe including shoes I dont have half that invested in the one sweatshirt price.

My suggestion to you OP is save your money and stop trying to impress everyone with fashion, buy clothes to cover your ass, balls, and man bewbies for about $9 for pants and $5 for a shirt, and spend the rest on other stuff that truly matters....like beer, hookers, and electronics 😉
 
Wait for sales.

Sometimes, although rarely, you can get lucky at places like TJ Maxx or Ross. Most of the time the clothes there are just crap.
 
If it costs that much to be "fashionable", I'd rather not. IMHO, just about every piece of clothing in the first link looked ridiculous anyways.
 
uhhh. FYI, those shirts are fugly.

1) Get a fashionable pair of dark jeans (for winter)
2) Get a fashionable pair of light jeans (for summer)
3) Get a few plain polo shirts
4) Get a few button down dress shirts (can get them fairly cheap from american eagle, etc...)
5) Get a few plain t-shirts

No need to spend $70 for some stupid fugly design on a t-shirt. Just stick to the basics, and then build from there (turtle necks, sweaters, etc...)

Fashion is a farce. If you look good in the clothes you wear, you look good in the clothes you wear.

It really does matter where a person buys an identical shirt if he or she is 'into' fashion. For example, a $39 shirt at Nordstrom's will be worth much more to them than an identical shirt purchased for $19 at Macy's.

IMO, the best fashion is variety. A wardrobe made up of lots of decent-looking inexpensive items can be mixed and matched in a way to never look like you wear the same thing twice. A wardrobe made up of expensive clothing will have much less variety.

So, here's what you do: Go to Target and buy some decent looking shirts. Go to JC Penny and buy some clothes. Go to Macy's and buy some.. Then go to Nordstrom's and splurge on one or two items. Boom.. updated wardrobe. What's this called? Shopping.

One more thing.. You can greatly increase the 'variety' of what you wear if you buy some old vintage stuff off of Ebay. My girlfriend (not a Cub's fan) wanted one of the old 80's Cubs shirts.. Some store like Saks was selling one for $69.. a TSHIRT. She bought a REAL 80's vintage Cubs shirt (no stains or nothing) for $15 shipped.

Fashion for the rest of us.. or fashion that isn't a 'farce' is obtained by spending some time attempting to look good.
 

Don't know where you live but IF you have a Dillards nearby (somewhat like Macy's) they are having a storewide clearance sale on men's clothing. I like a line called "Roundtree and York". I walked in last weekend and ended up buying 8 pullovers/sweaters for about $75. This is quality apparel. If you have one nearby ... give them a try.
 
I gave up trying to keep up with fashion and just defined a "style" for myself as well as a back story as to why that's my style...

For the T-shirts - just buy some plain t-shirts and throw up on them.

For the other clothes -
H&M (forget about their pants unless you're emo... they're too tight around my thighs)
Kohl's
Any department store's clearance section
Target
Costco
Express Men has a few big sales a year that you should look out for
Sears - seriously. They bought the Structure name when Structure became Express Men, and they use it to market clothes that are very similar in style to what you'd find in Express Men.

Most importantly, don't let people feed you that line of BS about expensive clothes being higher quality. The markup on a $45 t-shirt is insane, and the quality really isn't that different from a $15 t-shirt. Same with other clothes. I own some expensive clothes, and I own some cheap clothes. Some of my clothes didn't wear well, and whether it was expensive or cheap doesn't seem to have any impact on that. If you're looking for stylish clothes, you're not going to wear them long enough for the quality to make a difference anyway. The quality argument is just something people tell themselves to convince themselves that it's worth spending $50 to have the Abercrombie name on the outside of their shirt.
 
I typically shop at Banana Republic as, for me, it is meets my price/comfort ratio. (Dress shirts in the 50-80$ range, t-shirts for 10$, casual shirts for 30-50$....)

I typically wait for sales or buy from outlets when I can.
