i'm pretty impressed with the Audi Quattro system. so if they're available in your city, test drive an Audi Q7 SUV...in the rain.

Buying an SUV based on horespower seems silly. (You should be) Either you're towing a trailer or moving people. Wouldn't torque be a better number to base your purchase on? Turbodiesel ftw.

Well, there are actually people who buy Ford Lightnings, so

I don't get it, myself.

Q7 V12TDI as mentioned, Range Sport or the Range Rover itself are all good contenders. The Audi couldn't be called "sex on wheels" though, the others could under some circumstances.

Anyway, my vote is Range Rover or the Cayenne Turbo, both seem like good fun.

Range Rovers are great, but the Lexus LX470 pwns if you're really going to be using the car for real bushwork. Plus they have this great advantage called 'reliability', something LandRover doesn't understand ;) Step 'down' to the Landcruiser 100 series and you get the sweet 4.2litre turbodiesel option if you want a real workhorse.

I'd buy the Toureg V10 Turbodiesel over the Cayenne if i simply wanted great on road handling and looks, built on the same platform, cheaper, and that sweet, sweet big diesel..but then if i bought a car like that i'd be taking it fishing on the beach, and doing some serious bushwork, where these softies couldn't really cut it without some serious modification, and what if they go wrong? Don't they only have a space saver spare? The only VW dealers are in Perth and a few big country towns, and i doubt the smaller country dealerships could do much with a Toureg anyway...

I'd go with the new 07 Range Rover Sport - amazing. Also I saw that they have a deal that if you have a small business that you qualify for something like $15000 in tax benefits, which should make it a lot more afford able for tons of people. The terrain response system is sweet, and they've redone interior as well, nice.

The ONLY good thing about the Cayenne is that idiots buy it and therby give Porsche money so that Porsche can focus on R&D for their real vehicles. Like the new Cayman.

Are there SUVs better at being SUVs?

Or are there SUVs better at being cars?

For Off-Road capabilities, a stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon would probably kill anything mentioned in this thread.

you mean the boxy one?

Yes, the one and only G wagon. The AMG version has 476HP.

so you mean it's a big boxy wuss?

try 520 HP and 530 lb/ft of torque in a vehicle that weighs 400 pounds less. and actually handles. porsche > *

even if you really need a full-on bruiser, the Land Rover is significantly more luxurious, more capable, and cheaper than the G-wagon.

I'm totally behind you on the Rover - its what everone compares their SUVs to for a reason. On road or off road its gtg and nothing else combines performance with luxury like it, and if you can qualify for one of its tax discounts there is no reason not to go for it.

Well the Cayenne offers the best handling of anything mentioned in this thread but at the same time, can go off road somewhat decently unlike the Land Rover Sport or X5/X3/ML/FX ;)

Anything that works better than the Cayenne off-road will be much less involving to drive on-road(LX/G Class/RangeRover/etc)...

So it kinda depends on where you'll be most of the time. If you plan on driving on roads, get the Cayenne, if not, get the alternatives. The best thing about the Cayenne is that its the only "sporty" SUV that won't get stuck on your front lawn if you've forgotten to mow it for a week...

That car is an abomination.

That said, if my goal was to go fast, handle reasonably well and be able to seat 5 comfortably while costing a ton of money then it's probably up there on the list of SUVs.

However, if my goal was to have a capable off road vehicle then my answer to your question is yes, there are plenty of better SUVs.

Yeah.. The Wrangler JK. If you want a sports car, buy a damn sports car. Porsche's car based SUVs is just as disgraceful as Jeep's new car based SUVs.
