going to be working on my friend's box, getting it up and running, but I don't know what's inside, and his OS is shot (win xp). Is there some kind of belarc advisor type program that can be run from a cd or floppy?
 
Quite a few of those types of progs have to run under Windows as they really are just spitting back at you the info that is already in the registry about your hardware. There might be something on a Knoppix CD that would be useful or maybe that Ultimate Boot CD that's out there on the web. Probably easiest just to open the thing up and look...

yah, his install of Windows XP is totally shot and I'm not sure what he's running inside, so I can't just install it and run it because Windows won't start up.
