Is the Xeon processor a server chip?

Is the Intel Xeon processor a server chip? Can you play games on it? I know that Playstation 3's 9-core "cell" processor is a server chip, which is why it is actually a bit slower at running games than XBOX 360's Tri-core CPU.

Yes it's a server chip, but that's more marketing that anything else. The architecture is no different.

The only difference between Xeons and Core i7's is that Xeons are binned higher and have support for ECC RAM. They are aimed at Servers and workstations, but besides those two differences are no different than an i7.

Most of the higher ones also have the option to be installed in dual socket or quad socket boards. Sometimes other small difference from the desktop brothers but nothing you would notice.

They (some models) have multiple QPI links which allows multiple CPUs in servers and other custom set-ups. A 7500 series can have a terabyte (or two) of RAM(!) for I'm sure about 100K or so (I'm guessing here).

What part of there the same chips did you miss? Only adds sever like features to the chips everything else is the same just no need for home user to pay more money for stuff they don't use or need.

Also someone asked about overclocking depends on the boards most sever board don't have much in terms of overclocking but you can get boards that allow it yes.

I thought server chips were not very good at all, at playing video games.

So what you're saying is that the Xeon is basically a Core i7 with added, server-like features.

I think the 5600 series xeons are i7 based anything below that is core 2 like quads.

And the PS3 has no games because it picked a CPU architecture that should have never been used for games. A crappy SDK, a vastly different architecture, and you have something that is hell to develop for.

They are not binned higher.

They are in the sense that they are rated for continuous operation at high utilisation which not all consumer labelled chips will be able to achieve. Same with 1P Opteron v. Phenom II.

And from the lower max voltage I'd expect the average Xeon to use less power than the average desktop chip of the same specs.

Checking the spec sheets of xeon's vs their standard counterpart shows the xeons to have higher thermal tolerances than desktop cpu's.
