Is the world less thoughtful today than it was in past ages?

Or does it just seem like it? Or maybe people are more casual and feel like they don't need to put on the pretense of high thought like they used to, even though those pretenses fostered the one or two original thinkers of each age.

It doesn't seem like that to me. I know some people who I can discuss really deep issues with for hours at a time. I once stayed up all night with this old man in the old city of Jerusalem just discussing stuff. Deep, deep things. There are plenty of thinkers around, they're just not as vocal as they once were.

Why do you think that is? Perhaps because everybody can "publish" in print or online now, the more original things have trouble pushing their way to the surface?

Its not that people dont have deep thoughts its just they have become less civil in discussing them, P&N is an excelent example of this.

People were more interested in "real" thoughts once. Now life is so much busier, people don't really have the time to sit down and think about things. Unless they make time for it.

Yes. The world today is built to create drones and not original men (and women). Society has matured and is taking its place as a higher form of evolution than man and it is preying upon man for its own sustenance. Schools and colleges do not teach children how to think, but how to become productive members of society. They teach them how to live in close quarters with others and how to tolerate a city style of life. And so the society nurtures the young men and women as a farmer nurtures his livestock, waiting for the day that they are fattened enough to be eaten and to perpetuate the very system that creates and rears them for consumption.

You think so? No forums (not net forums, just forums in general) where people actually discuss things without getting heatedly bi-partisan? What about outside the US?

Nobody has time for hobbies requiring real thought. Used to be everyone kept a journal or even wrote books or took part in civic duties when done with the work day. Sure we've got the Internet and blogs and forums but how much thought do we put into our posts? Its all just stream of consciousness now. But back then a lot of careful thought was put into what was said before pen hit paper. I guess nowadays that's just not the case. Take this post for example--I could've written two or three paragraphs but I spent all of 55 seconds on it and now I'm going back to finding teh funnay.

I wonder what it would take to return to the pace where some level of thoughtfulness was sustainable.

It is save portions of the south.........
Edit: Of course I meant "polite/ thoughtful" but as far as "thinking" it is sporadic and less common..........

Too many people like you and me and our friends, working 50, 60, 70, 80 hours a week because it's "normal". Till the land, hop a steamer ship, things like that aren't easy to do anymore. We'd need to go back to a way of life that most people don't want.

ATOT.....the thread just has to be introduced. Of course you will get the bored P&N asshat in there but............

It's also much easier not to think about some things. If people were honest with themselves, they'd discover that the thinking may bear a responsability to act on those thoughts to better oneself. That's a scary thought for many people. Easier to just play GameBoy.

This probably doesn't mean much but with that response and your past responses I tend to agree with you................

Good point. I'm guilty of that myself often, I know. Except without the Gameboy.

I'm not talking heated or passionate debate, but the all out downright dirty mudslinging, namecalling and flaming that goes on in there. If people disccused things and at least attempted to compromise isntead of acting like children the world would be a much better place.

I'll give you webspace....act on your theory.......

I think this is a VERY important topic... I think part of the problem is few people are rewarded for DEEP thought in this day and age. Thinking deeply about problems is not sexy... and things that are not sexy don't sell well. In this day and age, there are few "artists" or "philosophers" (Think Thomas Paine) who can take the time to really think deeply about problems or anything actually. Even bloggers can't look too deeply at things -- they are rewarded for speed and breaking news, not depth of thought or even really depth of investigation or even elaborate or quality writing...

Basically, I see it as a sort of race to the bottom of sorts... and it worries me

Edit: University professors are perhaps some of the only people rewarded for deep/academic thought.. but I think modern professors (dont know about the past...) are very bad at taking philosophical ideas and communicating them in effective ways to the rest of the world...

Part of the problem is that the rest of the world just isnt LISTENING. We are too busy playing World of Warcraft...................................
