Oriental describes furniture and stuff like that. Not people.

I've had people get pissed at me for using the word Asian and Oriental because Asia or the orient is so big. A friend gets grouchy when you refer to her background as anything other then Japanese, but then again I don't get pissed when someone calls me white then demand that they call me Scottish with a hint of Native American.
I think someone decided to make up the phrase "politically correct" just to make everyone uncomfortable when talking about anything.![]()

Eh? I always thought that Oriental described people from the Orient, which is basically eastern Asia. Why wouldn't it apply to the people there as well?

I always used the word freely but some of my college friends says it's not politically correctI've never heard anyone say that it's not PC. I hear stuff like oriental food in advertisements and stuff like that all the time.

I think beloved patriot is the word that some Indians find offensive. I live right next to a big Indian Reservation. All the Indians here call themselves Indians, the ones that I go to school withanyway. On tv or newspaper, it's usually native americans.
