Is The Wire the best show of all time? Or is there some competition?

I don't understand the love for Breaking Bad. I watched the pilot and it was so bad that I didn't watch a second episode.

The first episode was the one that hooked me. I tried getting into the Wire but I couldnt get past the first episode. Maybe when I have less to do during the summer ill try again.

It may sound strange, but you need to give the wire until 3rd season for you to get completely convinced it is the best show ever.

... (I SAID "IMPLIES"...

Which makes you an ass hat.

Enjoy.

Every show hits a stride by the 3rd season: Writers and actors are comfortable, but there is still new stuff for the characters to do.

How low did the ratings get? Poor ratings, and it won no major awards.
Kind of like Shawshank Redemption. Which is now considered one of the best movies of all time by a wide segment of film critics and the general population. Ratings are indicative of popularity, not quality, and anyone who uses them as a metric for how good something is has no business critiquing an art form.

This is a popular sentiment; I therefore feel you are correct.

Completely agree, watched the pilot episode, hated it, then 6 months later my friends were insisting I watch it, so I watched the pilot again, hated it, never seen any more.

LOL! NO. Shawshank Redemption isn't even on all critics top 100 list.

The only place I remember seeing it at number one is IMDB, because their system is hacked/exploited.

It's on AFI's Top 100 films, ahead of both Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump (its competition for the Oscar in '94). I'm not going to search every critic, but it has a 90% on rottentomatoes, which seems to indicate fairly widespread acclaim. But it still bombed at the box office. Popularity doesn't make something great any more than obscurity makes something bad. What does it matter what ratings it got?

Breaking Bad is exceptional.

That is all.

The Wire is slow. I appreciate it....but it's a slog.

It's not number one though is it, not even close. It didn't even use to be on the list at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI's_100_Years...100_Movies It's hardcore fanboys have done a good job of hyping it up, until the impressionable think it's better than it is. Lots of people's opinions are easily influenced by others.

I liked the movie, but I don't think I would put it in my top 100 list if I ever made one.

Kind of like The Wire, it wasn't good enough to keep people interested in it for 5 seasons, but now that it's off the air some people have been convinced it's the best show ever.

Not a scripted show...

However one of my favorite moments from that show are

the remote control car race using real cars outfitted with remote control kits

and when they are reviewing the Corvette ZR-1 and the host can't get over the fact that they dared to use plastic for the rear body panel then when he gets behind the wheel he's initially reluctant to like driving it then gives in.

Yeah I couldn't get past the plastic if it were me.

My favourite bit in the show is the £10,000 super car challenge. 😀

I liked The Wire except for the final season. It gets a solid 4 out of 5 stars from me. Good show but not in the same league as Game of Thrones.

Gee... Ever think about watching ANOTHER episode? The Breaking Bad pilot was lame, but it gets better quickly.
