Is the Winchester mem controller $#%@ed up?

Okay, so I bought an 3000+ winchester and I just can't get it to run stable at a 1T command rate. I tried underclocking memory, relaxing timings, and even using multiple different modules, but to no avail. I am currently using Crucial Ballistix PC4000, so i doubt that's the problem. I suppose my bios could still be to blame, cause before the 1T button still set things at 2T, so it's possible that there could be a problem with its 1T support. Still, i've seen a lot of issues like this on the web, and i'm beginning to think i'm not the only one. Does anyone else have these problems? If so, is there a way to get it exchanged with AMD? It seems like if they have a defective chip, they should replace it (preferably with an E0 chip, mmmmm....).

I'm betting on board. Some guys like to fanticise about AMD CPU's being faulty but since AMD is perfect I seroiusly doubt that's the problem.😀 Just kidding on the last part, but seriously, do you think AMD or Intel would release a chip that ran unstable when they have billions on the line and 2 millions greedy lawyers in this country looking for a class action? Nah, much more probable its a motherboard issue. I mean CHIANTECH, mainland china..good luck getting a nickle from them 😛

Yep...us MSI Neo2 board owners have no issue running 600ddr with 1t....I could run near 550ddr dual channel cas 2.5 with 1t...It is your board or a combination of the memory and compatability with the board...

My gskills will run cas 3 no problem yet mey geil sticks would not run cas 3 nomatter the speed or how far I underclocked to speeds they ran cas 2 at all days....I couldn't blame the mobo on that one...

Have you tried the ram in different combonations of slots? The chipset won't let it run at 1t if there are 2 modules in one channel.

it's dual channel for sure. It even autodetects to 1T, but then it's unstable, so i have to manually set it to 1T. Well, I guess I have to talk to chaintech, and figure out what to do...god, I hate relaying tech support info through email....

Anyways, I guess I'd rather have a mobo problem than a CPU problem, since I've already voided the CPU warranty by removing the included thermal paste and overclocking. Of course, I guess I'd better hold off on installing that new Zalman northbridge cooler until i get this resolved...

So if it is the board, is it likely it's just a BIOS issue, or is it usually an actual defect?

I have the same RAM and cannot get above 220 Mhz at 1T on my A8N-SLI with FSB:memory at 1:1. Even trying to run the FSB at 240 mhz and the RAM at 200 mhz (using the DDR366 setting), it won't boot at 1T. IMO, it could be the board, the memory or the CPU. The fact that the memory controller is on the CPU makes it even harder to narrow down where the problem is.

That said however, it runs perfectly stable at 1T at stock speeds (and a bit higher).

BTW, at what voltage are you running your memory? The default voltage is 2.8V for the Crucial Ballistix PC4000. The default RAM voltage on my A8N-SLI was lower than that.

right now it's 2.9V, I had it at 2.8 as well with no noticeable difference. My mobo won't go higher than that, and I'd prefer not to, anyways.

As for the RAM, I'm pretty sure it's not the memory that's the problem. I had the exact same problem with the corsair value ram I tried before, so I think it's either the CPU or the mobo, hopefully the mobo. And besides, the review of the memory said it could hold 1T timings up past DDR560, so i doubt that's it. Anyways, I think i'm just gonna keep bugging Chaintech until they send me a new mobo or a BIOS fix for this.

most people assume that since they have PC4000, its not their ram that is the problem. Fact is no AMD64 processor supports more than 400Mhz FSB. So the thinking that you can hit actual PC4000 speeds just because, is kinda well, wrong. I read at least 2 anandtech reviews that showed that good ol PC3200 Ran better in their tests of like 10 brands of ram rated at PC4000 and up. Even had some PC2700 that outran the top PC4000 of the day.

I dont agree that its "not" your ram. It still may very well be. I would reach the best 1T timing then stop. you have reached a limit. anything that is 2T is not worth it for performance wise, too much of a hit.

that's the thing. I can't hit 1T at ANY speed. DDR400? Nope. DDR333? Nope. DDR266? Nada. Same thing happened with the corsair Value RAM I was using, so I really think it's the CPU or the mobo. That's why I'm hoping it's the BIOS or something.

actually, yes. Mistakes can and do happen, and your theorem is waaaaay off. I can tell you have no legal education, but cut the crap - you're misleading people.

Edit: This all said in a friendly way, I mean no offence! Zebo does rule! 😉
