I just started hand lapping my new Volcano H/S,and discovered it was concave in the center. Is it that way on purpose to prevent cracking your processor. Or does it just need to be lapped real bad?
I read where alot of people are having trouble cracking their duron chips. If the H/S was finished smoother I might believe being concave was ment to be. But it was pretty rough so I'm lapping it.
Now after lapping it flat will I need a shim to take the pressure off of the center of the processor? I've built several computers, but this is my first Duron. And even though they are cheap now I'd hate to ruin it and have to wait on another one.

My FOP-32 was concave. And rough. Really crappy job there GlobalWin, appreciate it. Lapped it, temps went down. As for chipping, well it'd already taken two corners off the core, so I can't say being rough and concave helped.

Lap that thing, then send them a bill for your time.

Thanks Mc
There is alot to be said for the old saying " If you want it done right,do it yourself."
Did you lap your FOP 32 after you had your system up and running? How much difference did it make. I really just thought it was something that helped but you would not actually be able to measure the difference.
