Did you check to see that the 'hole' just isn't blocked by a small plastic plug. ?? Technically, the missing pin, and the signal on the pin, identify the interface as 33 or 66, BUT i think that IBM recommends ATA66 cables even for ATA33 interfaces due to the fact that the extra ground wires produce a more stable signal. Actually, they do not reduce interference, the signal becomes 'cleaner', that is after the trailing edge of the data pulse, the 'ringing' is reduced.
