Unfortunately, I think a lot of people are not as affected by near-misses. That's how we got to 9/11 in the first place. I mean for god's sake they tried to blow up the building once before and it really wasn't that big of news.

Do not mistake we the people for the media. The media these days is crap, which I think directly relates to this topic. Worst part is we still largely rely on the media so if they do not make a big deal out of something, then perhaps the nation at large won't.
Which begs the question, are we anything more than sheeple to the likes of MSN, CNN and FOX?

I was in London in the 80's and early 90's and tubes were regularly (a daily occurrence) shut down because of IRA bomb threats.
Its normal and healthy to 'get on with shit' in the face of terrorist threats.
What do you want to happen? The authorities have dealt with the threat and I'm pretty certain the idiots in this case will be picked up soon.
You could of course set up a bomb shelter under your duvet and stay there but whats that going to achieve.

To some extent I agree with this. I don't think the OP is advocating we live in fear, but rather that the media take it more seriously.
You're kind of suggesting that the UK just went on with their lives. Not exactly. There are CCTVs everywhere.

I have to ask, is our long series of domestic near misses accidental or designed?
Someone like Richard Reed and probably Mousosie were mentally ill, unstable, and its unlikely anyone inside Al-Quida would recruit or trust them with a complex operation. Likewise I doubt the competence of Hose Pedio caught at the Canadian border.
About the only attack that got anyone killed was Nadal, the FT hood shooter, and from I understand, he was dealing with a Yemeni cleric stupid enough to communicate by email. Its also my understanding that the same fellow recruited Jehdad Jane in such an incompetent manner that even State officials were investigating parts of the ring of domestic contacts.
There is simply no comparison between that attack level competence and the real deal that 911 was. 911 was something Al-Quida carefully planned and dress rehearsed for two years, that went off like clockwork.
On one hand we may want to believe the AL-Quida is so disrupted that they are no longer capable of such an operation, or may we instead believe that Al-Quida no longer feels a need to plan a sequel?
As for me, I have no idea, but I find it hard to believe Al-Quida is incapable of another such spectacular exploit.

Umm there's no entrance exam to Al-quida.

We did just get on with our lives. CCTV is relevant. The point is that it's not like nothing changed in the UK. The laws changed and law enforcement changed in very real ways as opposed to your anecdotal evidence.

Infohawk does make some valid points about CCTV, law enforcement, and the IRA. But the thing to point out if that IRA dispute has largely gone away because the IRA has a largely abandoned terrorism.

Islamic terrorism is presently focused on the western world and determined to bring it down.
It's important to be aware of the constant threat it posses to modern western society. The fact that this radical war is not only fought in far away places, it has come to our own back yard with an agenda, whether is a domestic or foreign threat is yet to be decided. What's more, the infiltration has been growing and they're scheming to use the same laws we use to protect us against us.

because by now most americans realize that the phony terrorism threat is just an attempt at social manipulation. they took minor incidents (eg a crazy guy with a lighter on an airplane) and tried to tell us that these were a major threat to our lives and by now everyone realizes they arent

The prevalence of CCTV in the UK was more of a reaction to 'normal' violent crime not the IRA.
But thats beside the point, I was under the impression that the thread was about peoples attitudes to bomb threats and terrorism not the impact on government policy.

I think Penn & Teller said it best on Bullshit. People act like they are safe because deep down they know they are safe. 9/11 sucked but that was a 1 time thing.
This. People in Israel (terrorism) or South Africa (crime) have a real reason to be paranoid all the time. People living in most parts of the US don't have much reason to be paranoid.

We're not septic like those neighboring Islamic nations, but that's no excuse to invite the infection. Look at those examples and we have a good reason to be vigilant to keep this threat / ideology off our shores. To keep the disease from spreading.
