IS THE TOTURE TEST OPTION 2 IN PRIME 95 ENOUGH?

Hi. I just put together the new rig and am in the process of OCing it. I run prime among other things to test stability. When I chose option 3(blend) in the torture test," Test 1" runs continously. It ran for more than 3 hrs last night. I stopped it then although it did not give me any errors as I did not know if it was actually running. Does it take that long to complete test 1?

I then ran test 2 thru the night-ran thru the whole loop without any errors. Is it enough? Should I go back to option 3? Thanx in advance.......

Whats your specs? I know prime will go faster or slower depending on your systems speed, but that does sound awfully long. Test 1 usually takes me about 10-15 minutes.

Here are my specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ NC core (250X10) at 1.50 Vcore
DFI lanparty UT NF3 250GB
OCZ paltinum Rev2 3200EB 2X 512 2.5-3-3-00 1T 1:1 at 2.60Vdimm
ATI 9800 Pro AIW
Thermalright Tsunami Dream
NEC 3500A DL drive
WD 74GB raptor SATA
Seagate 200GB UATA
Fortron source 530W PSU
Thermalright XP-90 with Panaflo 92mm

I thought so too that it was taking too long..I then stopped the test...the message I got was.."test halted.Ran 2hrs 0 warnings 0 errors". I then used option 2 and it ran for about 12hrs without any issues. Can I assume that it is stable and continue the OC? .....Thanks

Actually I think I found something better. Run Folding @ Home. If you can finish a weeks worth of units running 24/7, you are good. I thought my 3200 90nm@2400 was god, but it wouldn;t even finsih one unit, then down to 2350, then 2300, now at 2250 its perfect. And if you try this, please join team 198 (Team Anandtech). And I really am not saying this just to help our team, it really works. I just want our team to get credit while you find out how good your OC is.

Edit Had to go down to 2230.

rpv,

Torture Test 1 is the best for CPU testing only; Blend tests both the CPU and System Memory.

The quickest way to test system stability for me is to run Blend overnight, and do 30 repeats of Nature in 3DMark2001.

A more thorough way would be to run Torture Test 1 for 20+ hours, run Memtest (DOS program) to test your memory, and then run 30 repeats of Nature and Troll's Lair (3DMark05).

When you run 3DMark, Nature really tests the stability of the video card (if it can do 30 repeats, it's probably never going to lock up during gameplay), while Troll's Lair tests for artifacts (which is why you need to watch the screen during this test for errant pixels, texture clipping, etc.)

Blend runs without error....the problem is that it stays at" test 1 lucas-lehmer iterations using 1024K FFT length". Yesterday I ran blend for more than 3 hrs but it did not go further than test 1. When i stopped it to switch to option 2(large FFT), blend reported no errors.

Should I then leave it on blend(option 3) although it stays put on "test 1"? Thanx in advance.......

ha interesting thread...same problem that I have..I had the older version of catalyst & I think it ran okay..I recently downloaded the new version of catalyst( 4.11 I think) from the ATI website..I should probably reload the older version from the CD i have and try again..

4.9 allowed prime to run OK for me. Only 4.10 and 4.11 have caused this problem for Prime!

and this is another case that helps prove that prime is not be all end all of stability tests.. there are many factors that can affect its performance and reliability, including but not limited to drivers.

What is good to run to test my memory? Should I do this blend thing in PRIME 95 or should I use something else?

I had o/c'ed my computer before and everything ran fine, but recently i took it apart to clean out all the dust and when I put everything back together my system wouldn't bootup so I had to underclock it and then reo/c it back to my original setup. I just want to test my ram to make sure everything is ok.

Is it safe most of the time to run a torture test? My temps always jump much higher than they would ever get in any other program/game.

It doesn't feel good running at 58C, it might go higher then that actually, i turned it off when it hit 58, which was like 5 minutes later, it just kept climbing.

hmm that seems high if it hits beyond 60C...but its still under the threshold.

i think there could be a problem with the placement of the heatsink.

i have the same cpu as you, but overclocked, and it peaks @ 50C with Prime95, but i also live in a cold environment :). Ive seen it go higher with other number crunching programs similar to prime.

if you have a cpu temp monitoring program try running prime95 and if it passes the 70C mark stop prime; if thats the case then theres probably a problem with the placement or the thermal paste.

i dunno, heatsink and thermal paste are on fine, and i also live in a cold environment. My computers have just always run hotter than average people's computers, not sure why, they just do.

Ran prime for more than 15 hrs yesterday....got it stable for now...My specs

CPU: 255X10 on air
Memory: 2.5-3-3-0 1T 1:1
Vcore: 1.61
Vdimm: 2.7
Temps: 35 when idle and 47-48 when running prime...

Should I go for a higher FSB or should i try to tighten the memory timings next......Thanx in advance...

Use memtest86 for testing your ram.

Back to the original topic, many peeps would say that the best test for system stability test using Prime95 is the custom test, set Min FFT to 2048 and let'er rip! Hands down this has founds problems in my OC faster than any of the other tests.

Mike.
