Is the stargate series any good?

There are a number of stargate series. The movie was excellent. something like 16 seasons of SG-1 another few seasons of atlantis (I'mprobably wrong - nerds correct me!) SGU If I recall lasted <1 season. They all are based on the same basic premise - watch the original movie for details.

wow. way off

SG1 - 10 seasons, 2 movies (3 if you count the original stargate)
Atlantis - 5 seasons
Universe - 2 seasons

SG-1 = great (after a few bad episodes in season 1)
Atlantis = pretty good, but realize the Earth people are somewhat evil in this one
Universe = has its moments, but also much stupidity and young adult drama

All Stargate series are great and we need another one, just like we need a new Babylon 5 series and a new Star Trek series that follows up on Deep Space 9 and shares some of its characters. Universe is good but it was cancelled in the middle of it's plot, leaving unresolved story.

The long running Star Gate: SG1 series and the recently cancelled Star Gate: Universe have entirely little in common. While they share some plot element and sometimes characters, the series are each like night and day. Atlantis was so bad it's not worth mentioning... aside from the character Rodney McKay.

SG1 was far less cerebral than 'Universe', and certainly a lot lighter in terms of it's plot elements. Who really cares how a hyper-drive works if it involves some good one liners from O'Neal and some good gun fights against replicants or system lords. SG1 was really about entertainment and seeing how original the plot arcs would evolve.

'Universe' however is much darker, sharper, and rarely glosses over it's ideas with campiness like SG1 does. In some respects it's more like BSG than SG1. The first season got a little rough in the second half and rather violent, but the second season rapidly turns back to dealing with original concepts and characters cooperating with each other.

If anything, 'Universe' turns into some really good purist approved science fiction with sharply written characters and cosmological questions the other series wouldn't touch. It goes off on a few tangents, but there are some superb moments of amazement in the second half which didn't exist in the other series. It also ends WAY too soon, although the last episode hardly dissapoints. Eli is a great character, and you simply can't help but feel empathy for a kid that's watching the universe sprawl by him with big wide eyes. Even Rush starts to grow on you when you learn his true motivation that would drive any cosmologist insanse.

If you watched an episode and liked it I strongly encourage you to watch the second season in sequence, especially in HD which look incredible. First season will help establish how some of the technology works like the messaging stones, etc.

I watched the movie and every episode of every series and all made-for-video release starting in 2009 and I found very little interesting.

Why did I watch it? Graveyard shift and time to kill.

They gave up that "gate travel makes you violently fly out the other end covered in ice" bit pretty quick, didn't they? 😉

I only like the movie personally.

The tv shows are terrible to me. But I know a lot of people like them.

SG-1: It's very lighthearted and shallow for the most part, but it's entertaining definitely. The first three seasons or so aren't great, but it gets better especially in seasons 5-8.

Atlantis: There's a few good episodes each season, but I seriously don't think it's worth watching the entire show. If you really wanna watch it anyway, I would just watch the key/good episodes and skip the rest.

Universe: I'm about half way through S2 right now. It's a pretty blatant BSG ripoff loosely set in the SG universe. That said, it's a decent show so far, and I think I've enjoyed a greater proportion of the episodes than in Atlantis.

On a tangent, I think it's funny how the Lucian Alliance are portrayed as sort of bumbling idiots in SG-1 but in SGU they're all cunning and sinister.

Also, in SG-1 at one point Earth had diplomatic relations with the Jaffa, Tok'ra, System Lords, Nox, etc. but in SGU Earth seems to be all alone.

SGU kind of sucked except for the last half of the second season. The rest of the show was mostly just the two main chick characters going all emo.

Atlantis wasn't bad and definitely had its moments, but there was way too much of the whole:

<Sheppard>: Rodney, we need that <whatever> fixed! Now!
<McKay>: It'll take me at least 12 hours to fix it.
<Sheppard>: You have 15 minutes!
<McKay>: It is physically impossible to fix it in that amount of time!
<Sheppard>: Just do it Rodney!
15 minutes later
<McKay>: Okay it's fixed!

Also, there was too much deus ex machina in the show too. They'd always magically find some new gizmo that perfectly solved their problem.

Yeah they did a lot of "modify the phase variance." It felt too much like Star Trek for me.

I didn't mind all the gizmo stuff. What I didn't like seeing so much of was that they ran into a new disease in so many episodes. This is more about SG-1 but Atlantis had some of that too.

They're all great. Start with the movie, then proceed with SG1. Somewhere along the line SG1 and Atlantis begin to overlap, but only a little and it was on and off IIRC. If you really want to be accurate in the watching you might wanna begin alternating between the 2 series at that point, it should be fairly obvious where they overlap.

SG1 and Atlantis were great. Universe, I couldn't even make it to the mid season break of the first season. The show really had a great premise, but everything that they could do run, they did. Poor characters, lousy story arcs, etc. Nothing came together, no good villains or characters at all. 🙁 Its sad how quickly SyFy destroyed Stargate, because of SGU, you're not going to see another SG1 movie or an Atlantis movie, they were shelved indefinitely because of SGU.

I just started to watch SG-1 on Netflix. Much to my surprise, the first episode had full frontal nudity! Sweet.

Stargate has a fascinating story line as it evolves with characters that cooperate together. There is no ugly drama like with Lost or Battlestar Galactica. Stargate is pure fun that can be campy at times but is overall greatly enjoyable.

Round about the time they said they calibrated the gate or something similar to stop it happening.
