Is the south really as backwards as I've been told?

Ok I am not dismissing it but it seems that most people look to racism as the first cause. I would say a majority of the time it isn't racism. Just poor service
Don't you know, racism is the answer to all of lifes problems today.

yes, to a degree. Many parts of Alabama, Mississipi, Georgia, Arkansas, etc. are pretty bad. It isn't nearly as bad in the larger cities though...although i am sure there are a few that are bad. I live in SC and it gets pretty bad in the lower part of the state, but in the larger cities like Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston...it really is just as normal as what I was used to in the north. And there are parts of the north that are just as bad...ever been to upstate NY or wester PA? West Virginia is just peachy!!! Anyway, I have never seen the same type of behavior out West, but then again I really have only stayed in larger cities out there and never lived there long enough to digest it.

Talk about prejudice! I live in NE Louisiana but have lived all over including the midwest. We have our share of good ol' country boys but the funny thing is that they all hang out with the black guys. My school was half black, half white and everyone got along. In my four years there I had never seen any sort of race related fight. The only fight I have seen because of race was in OKC. As far them not getting seated, I have a hard time believing that.

mississippi and "The South" aren't the same thing. mississippi is part of the south, but not vice versa (so to speak, what i mean is you can't judge all of GA, SC, NC, AL, MS, etc from one experience in MS)

exactly where in mississippi was he?

my wife grew up in the atlanta area and we lived there for a couple of years. i traveled all over georgia and northern alabama for work, things like that are often related to the size of the city you are talking about . making generalizations against southerners is just as bad as the biased southerners that are still around

I believe it was Greenville. As another example, we sent two "white" employees down there and they had a black coworker girl show them around. She refused to sit in the front seat. She said they could be shot if she was seen in the front seat with a white guy driving.

You have to be kidding. Your co-worker is playing a sick joke on you. I have been all over the South and in Southern Cali, as well as Phoenix. I have seen white people helping blacks, and blacks helping whites. Blacks make up too much of the population in the South for there to be this kind of treatment. I went to school where white there was just as many blacks as there were whites. I would have to say that most of my true friends, those that I could really count on were black or Indian.

You might find this in BFE but this would be true of any remote section of the country regardless of geography. I'm still calling Bullsh!t on this

I have even approached people flying Confederate flags that live in towns that advertise that you can view a 5 legged calf for a nickel and they were polite to me.
This is because the confederate flag does not stand for bigotry no matter how much the KKK and other interest groups wish it.

I come from a mixed family (my aunt married a black man heh onohter married a fellow from mexico! so we have fun family get togethers!). we tend to stay togother as a family. growing up when one moved out of state the rest fallow.

We have lived in pretty much every state but a few (my dad owns a few car dealerships with his sisters and brothers). Well anyway we have NEVER seen such racism. Granted they have came accross some. But the BS of not being served in a resturant is just that..BS! oh and the girl claiming she would be shot if seen in the front seat is BS.

Its crap like this post that keep racism around. blah

I don't buy his story either. I've lived in the South for 13 years and traveled all over the country. There are bigots and racists everywhere. Southerners tend to be more hospitable and respectful to strangers. Ask any stranger in South for directions and they will go out of their way to help you; by contrast ask for directions in NY and you are lickely to be told off.

The real question is: are you white? I'd like to hear from some color folks. They'll know the real deal.
:| Where the fvck are you from???

Possibly? It keeps prejudice and ignorance around, and racism towards white people and prejudice against southern culture and people.

It's not prejudice towards white people, so it's not racism. It is prejudice against southerners.

It's not prejudice towards white people, so it's not racism. It is prejudice against southerners.

But let's face it, he means white southerners.

I don't doubt that sh*t happens down in "the South", but it happens everywhere...and I agree that if you're white, you don't really know what it's like from the black/non-white perspective. No hating, it's just the truth...I'm only Chinese, but even here in Michigan (albeit, Detroit), my family has had a few bad occasions. Where stupidity lives, ignorance and racism are often its neighbors.

edit: I didn't mean that stupidity only lives in the South. Just anywhere. whoops. 🙂

As much as I hate to say it, yes it is like that in certain parts of the U.S. People are ignorant and only do what they've been taught.

Hell, some of them never travel more than 20 miles from their home in their whole lifetimes.

Personally, I grew up in the north/midwest and moved to Alabama for school and I can't stand "the South". It has nothing to do with the supposed racism that's running rampant, the lifestyle pace is too slow for me. People in the south aren't anymore or less racist/bigoted than anyone else in the country. Sounds like you are suffering from some sort of "closed mind" syndrome....don't worry it's common among people at the far left & far right political spectrum. There is a cure for that syndrom though, get out and see more. Living someplace you claim has great diversity is no substitute for getting out and gathering experience first hand.

Kudos for whoever it was that went off on hyphenated Americans. I hate that. I don't run around calling myself European-American or British-American, I'm just your run-of-the-mill American. 🙂
