Is the Sony KP-53V90 Television Any Good?

I know absolutely nothing about televisions...I currently own a 21" magnasonic and i am looking for a new set. My friend who works at sony can get me the KP-53V90 model at a relatively cheap price. 1680 canadian to be exact. Do you think i should spring on the deal? I won't be able to see the tv with my own eyes because i have to decide tonight. I've heard the word HDTV go around but i have no clue what that is. Here is a link to the tv. Thanks!

DJediMaster, what does 1680 Canadian = is US dollars? I'm too lazy to find the currency exchange rate.

I just purchased a new TV yesterday and I can tell you that I would not buy a RPTV without HD capacity. Even if you don't get a set-top box for HDTV, you can still do hi-res with a nice DVD player. The price you are paying is good, but I would probably wait and save just a little more for an HD.

And for the record, I just bought the Toshiba 57h81 link

I'm getting a 61" toshiba delivered today🙂

The good about the Sony: It's a Sony, you'll be able to get parts & service pretty easily, the picture is great for a conventional TV. You're getting a good price if you buy it, and honestly, I wonder if HDTV will really be on board during this decade, there are one hell of a lot of conventional TV's out there & no-one's in a hurry to upgrade their transmititng equipment.

The bad: It's an analog TV, and rear projection, not as good a picture as the HD capable stuff out now. If you have or purchase a progressive scan DVD player now, you can see a pretty good picture on HDTV's, and some satellite & broadcast stations are sending out HDTV signals.
