Is the Rx570/580 8GB a suitable upgrade from a GTX 970?

I would wait and see,
2060 potentially might offer 1070ish performance for less $$$.
AMD Navi is due out in 2019, and it might be a good option, or, it might help bring down prices in he market.

So, 2019 or 2020 might be the year where you can score a nice 50% boost over your 970 for like $200ish.

I'm still waiting after buying a 960 a number of years ago as a "cheap upgrade" over my old 6870 card which only had 1GB of vram so couldn't play games like Fallout 4 or Watch Dogs 2 or GTA 5 due to lack of Vram to hold the textures.

That said, my other box has a Radeon 290 which is plenty fast, and the 470 I stuck in the wife's PC is plenty fast as well (comparable to the 970.)
