Is the Rx570/580 8GB a suitable upgrade from a GTX 970?

Checking Newegg and I notice how much cheaper then AMD dGPU are in comparison to Nvidia's 1070/1080 cards And so I'm wondering if the Rx570 and Rx580 w/ 8GB will be a worthy replacement for my GTX 970.

Now I've been using the GeForce series of graphic cards since late 2000 and I haven't had any issues with them at all. However the current issue I do have now is the pricing. I paid $250 for the 970 back in Dec 2015 and I'm not going to spend close to $400 or more for a new video card.

While pricing is the main reason I'm considering AMD for next upgrade, there is also the fact that they have usable Open Source drivers for Linux.

The RX 580 I could see doing, but otherwise the RX 570 would pretty much be a wash unless games needed the extra VRAM. Here is another thread asking about the difference between the RX 480 and GTX 970, and with the RX 580 is just a higher-clocked version of the same card basically.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3260129/480-gtx-970.html

Personally I think you would be better off buying a GTX 1070 (1070ti) on sale if you wanted a real jump in performance, if this is not another hypothetical thread.

To be honest, I'm more likely to wait until at least May before upgrading the dGPU. Maybe AMD will release a mid-range Vega/Navi by then.

What is the reason you are looking to change your 970? Is it giving issues? Is it dying? If not i don't see why would anyone want to switch from 970 to 570/580. Minimum would be 1070Ti or a used 980Ti or 1070/1080

Right now I'm not upgrading, but was only wondering if the Rx570/Rx580 would be an improvement due to their pricing.

However thanks, I'll just save my money until I can afford a suitable video card.

Yeah I agree with these guys, minimum worthwhile upgrade IMO is 1070 / Vega 56 level performance or above. 970 to 570/80/90 will not feel that much different except for VRAM limited games (maybe)

....and also let's not forget the excellent multi threaded nvdia driver. If the system has an older cpu and you throw an amd card in, you could actually get less performance for some games.

Thanks I didn't know that.

What is your CPU and other specs? We could help recommend an upgrade if needed, but I agree that going 970 to 570/580 is not a huge upgrade.

I would go for the RX 590, currently at $280 + 3 games bundle and it will be 30% or faster than your GTX970.

Hmm looks like an RX 590 would be a decent upgrade, but it also depends on the resolution. Of course a CPU upgrade may also help, again depending on settings.

I play at 1600p@60Hz. I do have half a mind to simply wait until I can afford to replace the CPU/MB/Memory and the dGPU at the same time. Of course I may just build an entire new system depending how it takes to save up the money.

Why do you like to throw money down the drain? You have a perfectly great system, why would you want to replace the whole pc.

Dude, I'm thinking in five years down the road, with maybe a video card upgrade half way.

1600p@60Hz? I would think you need to be thinking gtx 1070ti or higher for the resolution, although I actually think your current card is fine. Wait till Navi hits then look at it again.

Nope, and pretty much all the games I have on Linux i can play at 1600p with high setting well enough that I'm not inclined to buy a new card if there isn't much improvement.

But u said you are thinking of waiting until you can afford to replace the mobo and cpu and gpu together. But that isn't a good idea. Just upgrade the gpu in the future without worrying about cpu. Although yes as one can see some games are having issues with just 4 threads that the i5 has. So many people recommended the i5 even until a year or two ago and now stuck with just 4 threads. Unfortunate.

Well I'm sure that most folks using an older i5 will do just fine for at least a few more years to come. Come to think of it, due to quad cores are now budget priced, I expect an increase in the number of quad cores users as they build/buy new systems.

In Windows I think the 580 makes pretty good sense. I recently helped a buddy make a budget $500 gaming box, ended up with E5-1660 v2 6C/12T 3.9Ghz, 32GB Quad Ch DDR3-1600, 512MB SSD, 2x2TB 7200, and XFX RX580 BE 8GB. His main use was Battlefield games, and it was a perfect match for the 27" 2560x1440/60 IPS I gave him to replace an old 1920x1080/60 23".

Performance easily rivaled or exceeded my previous 4790k/16GB/970 box. Not so much that I would consider going 970 to 580 to be a great idea though. As others have noted going bigger will make more sense.

Has AMD figured out Linux drivers yet though? Last I heard they were still pretty rough on that front, though I don't keep up with it constantly. It was really frustrating to see, some cases a 580 was around or just beyond 970 levels, then in some cases you look and slower than 1050/960?? Do you have to do gaming in Linux? Maybe dual boot?

Eg https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=radeon-rx580-linux&num=4

Edit : ah, looks like things haven't moved considerably. Still, not as dismal as it once was.

RX 570 is essentially on par with the GTX 970, obviously having an advantage in DX12 and Vulkan games.

The RX 580 is about 20% faster than the GTX 970.

So neither is essentially worth it. If you want to upgrade, you'd need to look at the GTX 1070.
