Is the Retail Northwood HSF Reliable?

Is the Retail Northwood HSF Reliable for a 33% OC? i wuz gonna spend 40 bux on a volcano 478 + arctic silver 3....but im still getting the arctic silver to cool the chip.....but is it safe for a 33% overclock?

It seems to be very good for a retail hsf. P4 1.6As are easily hitting 2.1 and often 2.4 using only the retail hsf. And many of these guys stuck with the thermal pad and didn't bother using goop/grease instead. Heat just isn't a problem unless you want to go higher.

I have retail hsf doing 1.8@2.4 with thermal pad and rock solid even after prime95 torture test...

The retail hsf does fine...however I persobally don't like the idle to full load swing you see with retail hsf...in prime it can be abuot 15-18c...I hear aftermarket fans only cool about a few degrees less in idle but drastically improve the full load temps....

It also matters on how much vcore adjustemnt needs to be done to get 33 percent oc....I only need 1.57v with this chip, but I have seen some up to 1.7v and that will generate more heat and maybe to the point of the heatsink hitting high temps of low to mid 60's....

I run a 1.6 @ 2.608 [ 61% overclock ] on a retail getting temps of 40/50 idle/load. using original AS since i ahvent used up the whole tube yet. i think it should be more than sufficient.

what mobo is that? thats very good!

I'm not sure if Intel changed their processor packaging for their newer Northwood processors but I installed an original P4 for a friend and the heatsink didn't have a thermal pad, rather Intel packaged some thermal compound along with the HSF and the processor.
