You said it yourself, a name does not define you.

Neither does your race.

This thread was born because some ignorant ass believes that one violent black guy warrants racism against all blacks.

I am really astonished by the sheer amout of racialist shit that is allowed here at AT. Not just the threads being allowed but those that perpetuate them.

Let me post negative thread about whites on this site and see how quickly I get sent on vacation by the admins and flamed by the community.

Please do. I don't think anything will happen, and I've seen plenty of anti-white threads all the time.

Remember that many of these are done under code words. "Gun nut" and "republican" and "tea partyers" and "conservatives" and "right-wingers" are all pretty much code for "white guys"

But sometimes it's done explicitly. Many times. "Should white men be profiled as mass shooters?" "Do we need to take steps to reintegrate white men into society?" yadda yadda... There are numerous posters who comment in such ways, and make such threads.

And yet again here we have one on your side saying "I can't believe they allow these opinions I don't agree with"

There are a group of you guys who keep beating that drum, every fucking time you post... "Look at what they allow to be said here! Look at what's become of Anandtech!" (even though a lot of the posters saying it haven't been here any longer than myself)

A very blatant attempt to silence people they disagree with, through repeated, relentless reiteration of this same whine "shut up the people I don't want to have to hear!" and blatant attempts to shame those who run these boards into being self-conscious about "how their board looks!"

Really despicable, anti-free speech, and every one of you who pounds that drum should feel awful that you stoop to that level.

There are people I vehemently disagree with on the internet, and never in my life have I tried to silence any of them.

At various times since the mid 90's I've acted as the only moderator for some very prominent messageboards and a chatroom, I will not say which, and never banned anyone for anything other than flooding. I never silenced anyone. And this was back when I was a liberal. I always thought freedom of thought and speech were liberal ideals... I guess they were just MY ideals. I have them still now.

I've also made several YouTube videos some of which got massive numbers of comments, many of them bashing the living shit out of me (because of my view on the Trayvon case) and I never once deleted a single such comment. In fact, I event went so far as to hit the "not spam" button on comments which were against me, which I could tell my supporters in the comments had downvoted or flagged as such. I cannot tolerate people being silenced.

It says a hell of a lot about you guys that you not only can tolerate people being silenced, you salivate at the idea and WILL NOT DROP IT. You bring up your RAVENOUS desire for censorship every fucking time you hit "submit reply"

I'm thoroughly disgusted with that. You should learn to be too.

He does make a good argument, Eskimospy. If I'm flipping a coin and recording heads or tails, I count only the number of coin tosses which return either a head or a tail. If I'm fumbled-fingered and 90% of the time I drop the coin or miss the table, those numbers don't increase my sample size. If 90% of companies do not respond to any of the resumes, counting them among your sample size is problematic.

I think though that regardless of what level of confidence one attributes to this study's numbers, we all know there is discrimination against blacks at a higher level than discrimination against whites. (Not counting Affirmative Action, obviously, which is a necessary evil mostly instituted by the majority to improve society.) And we all know the reasons, some of which have valid roots and some of which are pure unreasonable human nature. And we all know that discrimination is unfair to the individuals involved, who aren't a race measured fairly or unfairly in aggregate but are individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses. And we all know that the less unfair discrimination within a society, the better off is that society.

No, he really doesn't make a good point at all, and it comes from not understanding what the sample is or even basic research design. Basically, to use your coin analogy, he is trying to say that only heads count towards the sample size. The research design was very simple. You send out resumes to various job postings and see what percentage get called back. That's your heads/tails dichotomous response. there's no 'fumbling the coin'. You are comparing the proportion of callbacks for both groups out of the whole and then running a test to see if the mean callback rate of both groups is equal. Their results say this is highly unlikely. Tossing out the companies that don't call either back is pointless and unnecessary.

To be more accurate though, the idea is more like rolling two ten sided dice to see if both are equally weighted. If you need a 10 to be called back and both dice are equally constructed after rolling them a few thousand times you should get roughly the same number of 10s from each one. The exact number you get will vary naturally around the 1/10 mean. If after a thousand rolls one has 100 tens and the other has 97, that's normal variation most likely. If after 1000 rolls one has 100 and the other has 5, that's a result that is highly unlikely to have happened purely by chance. That's what statistical significance is. And that's what we have here. (my numbers were exaggerated for clarity)

Tell that to the NBA and NFL.

Disparity of outcomes proves racist hiring procedures right?

Yup.

I said it before in another thread. I will accept Affirmative Action/set aside/quota programs if and when we have AA/set aside/quota programs in NBA/NFL/hip hop music/etc.

Fair is fair, right? :D

Great rebuttal.

A very large majority of the sample didn't have anything whatsoever to say about discrimination, they simply didn't call anybody. To therefore use them to increase the significance seems to me to be bullshit.

That's because you don't understand statistics or research design. How many times do I have to tell you this? They are comparing the mean callback rates of two groups. It would be utterly illogical to ignore the results where neither were called back. Since all other aspects of the resumes were equal but the names they should have very similar callback rates. They did not. For the purposes of the analysis we are discussing it would be nonsensical to exclude employers who called neither back.

The only results that should matter are the companies who called at least one applicant. They are the only companies who participated therefore they and they alone should be the only consideration when talking about possible discrimination.

No. See above.

Given however, that the study talks about call back rates instead of the actual discrimination so I get how the non callers matter. My point is that rates don't really tell us about discrimination because the only companies who "vote" on the subject are the companies who make at least one call. This sample is pretty small.

/facepalm. They only don't tell us about discrimination if you can come up with another plausible causal mechanism for how the extreme disparity was caused by some other unaccounted factor. The resumes were identical outside of the names. So far if I remember you've come up with that the names were 'too black' (lol), that they were instead looking at economic background (accounted for by study) that white people really are afraid of hiring black people (agreeing with the conclusions of the study you're attempting to attack), that the employers were already entirely filled up with black people and had inverse quotas (lol), etc.

You seem to have a genuine interest in public policy. Statistics are a big part of that. While I have long ago become frustrated with your dogged insistence to ignore what I'm telling you, I genuinely think you would appreciate and enjoy expanding your understanding of stats. It would also help you make better arguments. You don't even need advanced stats, most of the things you're getting wrong could be addressed in a Stats 101 course.

If you're unwilling to educate yourself on it though, why keep arguing about something you don't understand? Didn't you get burned enough in your 'analysis' of the presidential polls? You're making the same mistakes here.

Relativism feces from a notorious AnandTech forum extremist and supremacist who feels all too welcome at this forum to not only be comfortable in arguing the racist bunk of above but go further and advocate violent genocide upon targeted groups:

That's but one of this forum's regular extremist's posts, as easily chosen as he just posted on this page.

Even Anders Breivik had the control not to publicly advocate such violent and racist extremism on public forums, yet he acted as such in life.

It is a recorded reality. AnandTech has gone too far in permitting and tolerating the most extreme racism, hatred, and calls to violence. Charges that it is among the company of StormFront and other putrid societies of extremism on the internet are validated.

To maintain adequate decorum, the avoidance of breaking laws (open and specific calls to violence and death threats), the owners and moderation must act to remove the offensive members and clean up this sub-forum with specific warnings of what will no longer be tolerated.

I think you and Eskimospy are missing Buckshot's point, which isn't that discrimination doesn't exist but that perhaps the problem is smaller than the results presented suggest. 9% of employers called back black-sounding names at a statistically significantly lower rate, but 4% called back black-sounding names at a statistically significantly higher rate. Ergo it's not one in ten net employers, but one in twenty net employers from whom blacks face discrimination. And those one in twenty are pretty serious about it if 5% of employers can account for a 50% callback difference. (Note that I'm using Eskimospy's and Buckshot's numbers here - I didn't read the details since I found nothing surprising about a systematic discrimination against blacks. I mean, it's kind of understood that it's that way, isn't it?)

All races have the problem you describe. Of the Vietnamese with whom I grew up, all used Anglicized names. Mexicans are now naming their children Anglo names so they'll have an easier time fitting in when (not if) they cross the border illegally. I'm not saying it's necessarily right or wrong, just saying it's not a black thing.

Regarding names that are black, I just today met a woman in line at WalMart who went to school with my mother. Her name is Lucretia, her husband's name is Kermit. Both are white. I wondered if people would see their resumes as black. I also thought about a girl I used to know who is black; her name is Hiawatha. I bet she's blown some minds in interviews, although I doubt she's lost any jobs from racism - she's smokin' hot. (Which brings me to the REAL problem affecting our society - discrimination against the ugly! :D)

I understood his point. He can't appreciate the issues we're talking about because he has yet to understand that he has a privilege because he is white and Caucasians have had the power in this society for generations.

Even this discussion of names belays that fact. Why is a Jack, Joe or Tom a normal sounding name.

You wrote a post about entering heavily Muslim districts and shooting any Muslim on sight and what disgusts you is that people don't tolerate your freedom of hate speech on an internet forum? lol. Crazy much? Wait, are you still off your medication?

Btw, I'm sure your made-up black Muslim father in law mentor (whatever new lie of the day it is) would be ashamed of all the horse-shit that bubbles from your moth.

But seriously, I can only imagine the kind of company you keep that allows you to feel comfortable openly speaking the way you do. Scary stuff indeed.

This is what AnandTech remains upon the record of not only hosting but sanctioning as tolerated points of discussion for Politics and News.

Geosurface feels to be welcomed here to post "differing opinions." He is not an outlier nor alone for calling for violence upon targeted groups or promoting white supremecists rants while demeaning others.

I predict a few more of the vocal rabble will slither out to defend that nut rather than condemn his calls for violence and discrimination.

This is what AnandTech's P&R fosters and has become a home for. :'(

And yet more of the same from the usual cast of characters...

- Cries for censorship and begging to be protected from things they don't want to hear. And more perversely, don't want others to hear.

- Appeals to the sense of shame of those who run these boards, attempts to use intimidation tactics and implications of lost prestige on the Internets as a leverage point to get their ideological opponents silenced.

- Shameless comparisons to Hitler, Anders Brievik, and oh I dunno, maybe Timothy McVeigh or something? Anything that can be thrown at the wall to try to taint the person they want silenced... paint them as an extremist, try to associate them with people who are violent and unhinged... pretty disgusting tactics.

Have I sometimes, perhaps, gotten a bit over-exuberant in how I frame things? Sure, no doubt. Was talking about "shoot on sight" forced deportation of 1st and 2nd generation Muslim immigrants in Europe, who are already hole up in Muslim only "no go zones" operating Sharia courts and flouting every single thing about the countries they immigrated to... one such instance of me overstating something or getting carried away? Yea, I'll admit it was such an instance.

I'm more disturbed that there are people who tally up other peoples' posts and keep track of "the juicy ones" for later recollection when trying to get that person silenced. That's the sort of stalkery, obsessive behavior I've learned to be very wary of in real life interactions. But that's fine, I'm okay with being held accountable for what I've said.

Personally, if I were you guys... especially given that you have not been at these boards very long at all (and neither have I) I'd just take the fact that these unpopular opinions I, and others, have, ARE allowed to be expressed here... and the fact that when I said that about Muslims, I was in no way warned or penalized... and in fact, in my time here... I have only ever received one infraction... which was for saying I was "nominating so and so for least rational poster of the thread" (laughable to get an infraction for by current standards, it was during an experiment with more Orwellian standards on these boards such as what you guys wish for... which thankfully failed)... while meanwhile many of those who have attacked me most ferociously, and expressed opinions most akin to what you're saying now... I have seen banned repeatedly for being too personal, too dogged, and too obsessive in those desires to see others silenced.

I'd consider all that, if I were you, to be a clear indication of where these boards stand on the issue of unpopular opinions being expressed, and just drop it.

Or you can keep acting like obsessive weirdos toward people you disagree with, paying an unhealthy amount of attention to them... fantasizing about how they are someone's alt... or they run multiple accounts... or they are some returned figure out of ancient board lore, or they're misrepresenting everything about themselves and their beliefs... and you can keep fantasizing about getting them silenced and taken away.

That's your choice obviously, the day that the people who run these boards think like you do, and fulfill your petty wishes... will be exactly the same day I wouldn't want to be here any longer anyway. So I guess we'll just see how it goes. Meanwhile, I'm going to honestly express my views. And sometimes, I'll phrase things poorly or let my frustration with a current issue drive me to frame things in a more extreme way than I might on further reflection. That's just being human.

Just ask yourself, do you really want to be the sort of person who tries to get other people silenced? Are you okay with that being who you are?

Hey classy, still following me around and smelling my butthole? Get a life, dude.

If you want me to reply to you, how about you provide a link or two of what I asked over 2 years ago, eh? Still nothing? Yup. Why don't you go back to your corner and pull your old same old stunt of blaming on whites/Bush/Replicans/fill in the blank.

Here is another one for you, classy = http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps...NEWS03&Lopenr=212240801&Ref=PH&nclick_check=1

Do tell us what race is the "majority" in those mugshots. For those that are not familiar, classy was the one that provided a link with 40% and said it was a majority/most. And I am not kidding. :D Perfect example of AA in school, ladies and gentlemen.

Yeah, why can't people just advocate for the mass killing of Muslims in peace?

I personally would draw a distinction between "advocating for the mass killing of Muslims" and expressing a desire for European and western civilization to be preserved by insisting upon recent immigrants to depart and giving that directive some teeth and credibility via backing it up with threats of force if it is not obeyed... (which is, after all, the only way it would be obeyed.)

Do you see no such distinction?

This is getting very off topic and I already said I wouldn't word that the same way again.

Do you think a country ever has the right to make the determination that previously allowed immigrants were not a good fit after all and expulsion is required? Or is it, in your view, a situation where once you let people in... there's no going back?

Oh yeah, if you just changed the wording of that it would be just fine.

You have some serious personal issues that you need to address. The fact that you are outraged...OUTRAGED that people might call you out for repeatedly voicing some utterly vile, contemptible, and borderline psychopathic ideas is pretty gross in and of itself.

Yep, those who see things differently than yourself have personal issues, mental issues, are running multiple accounts, are lying about their beliefs and their personal life... etc etc etc. I've seen this shit from so many of your type.

It's just pure ad hominem, plain and simple and nothing more.

My "serious personal issues" are pulling my head out of my ass, de-brainwashing myself of a lot of PC, liberal bullshit... and realizing that I value western civilization and value it very greatly.

I've realized that I want us to land people on Mars, and eventually colonize other planets and solar systems.

And I've realized that those goals are very likely incompatible with unchecked population growth, burying our head in the sand about racial differences and structuring our society to ignore them.... and importing hordes of bronze age barbarians from the third world and allowing them to set up enclaves within our countries rather than assimilate.

I also realize that stating those truths openly will win me very few friends and a veritable cornucopia of bitter enemies. That's not something I desire, but it is also something I won't let impede me.

If I pulled my head out of my ass and stopped drifting through life in a Utopian, politically correct haze of nonsense... others can too. If there's just a 1% chance that I can get a few people to start considering some of these same questions that broke through my shielding by expressing my thoughts on it... then it's worth my time to do so.

I think you guys estimate my odds of getting through to a few people as being much higher than that... and I think that's why you're so DESPERATE to have me silenced.

Yes, people who advocate mass murder have personal issues. This is not a controversial opinion. I am absolutely attacking your person because that idea is so utterly psychopathic that it does not require refutation and any person that says it needs to be called out because they are saying seriously insane things.

Can you please be more concise in your endless posts attempting to rationalize your own bigotry? You blather endlessly like a coked-up asshole at a cocktail party. The fact that you're saying such outrageously racist, un-American things just makes it that much more obnoxious.

For my money this thread is a perfect illustration of the dreadful state of this board in late 2012. Overt racism is tolerated and, thus, tacitly encouraged by the mods. Because the overwhelming majority of the members here are white males, and the mods decline to do anything about racism here, this forum has become like a shittier version of stormfront.org (where at least the members have courage of their bigoted convictions and don't feel the need to waffle endlessly about it). You guys make me sick.

A mod taking action to shut down this forum's racism would not be practicing "censorship" - there is no government action involved, and our hosts are free to regulate our speech in whatever way they deem appropriate, just as I am free to kick bigots out of my own house. The mods in this forum used to vacation and ban members for posting racist conduct, and in doing so they helped elevate the level of discussion here.

Indeed - it's really sad. It wasn't always this way. Ironically I expect that Anand himself, based on his appearance and ethnicity, would fall into GS's "shoot on sight" policy if he were unfortunate enough to be innocently wandering around in Europe. If I were Anand I would not tolerate this.

Yes, people who advocate mass murder have personal issues. This is not a controversial opinion. I am absolutely attacking your person because that idea is so utterly psychopathic that it does not require refutation and any person that says it needs to be called out because they are saying seriously insane things.

Suggesting the backing up of a deportation with threats of force =/= advocating mass murder.

Violence, war, conquest... these things have been with our species since the dawn of time. They aren't pretty, but sometimes they are necessary.

We live in a world now where some people, mostly white, have duped themselves into thinking that's all in the past. They've tried to stop thinking of themselves tribally, and they've done so with good intentions... and have had a great deal of success in it.

Meanwhile, many many other groups of people still are thinking tribally and looking out for their interests... this is even encouraged by those same whites, and seen as a healthy expression of ethnic pride, etc.

Such group advocacy can appear harmless, and even positive when exhibited by a low powered minority... especially through the fog of white guilt. I know this all too well for it is the way I viewed it very, very recently.

However, when a certain tipping point is reached in the demographics... it may become very clear to white westerners just how "ahead of their time" they were in this attempt to stop thinking tribally. It may become starkly obvious to them how "not on the same page" other groups were.

At that time, the situational necessity of those old modes of thinking which are built into all of us on an instinctive level... may become clear again. Or maybe they won't.

Believe me when I say, I dearly hope I am wrong about this. I dearly hope that the person I was a year ago was right in thinking, as I'm sure you do, that all peoples are completely interchangeable, and that we'll be colonizing the stars no matter what our demographics become. I wish I could go back to believing it frankly... it has caused me nothing but stress and discomfort to stop doing so.

sure if they are fair about it. i have seen over racism against blacks shot down (though i do agree not often enough). but against whites an Asians allowed. I never really understood that. IF you want to stop racism you need to stop it all. not allowing it to flow one way.

you see that everywhere though. from TV to forums. it's just allowed under the guise of "white guilt"

Can you please be more concise in your endless posts attempting to rationalize your own bigotry?

I'll see what I can do.

In exchange, I ask that from now on, any time you reply directly to me, you save my time also by just pasting this:

Geo you are mentally unstable, racist, and the ultimate personification of how bad these boards have gotten. I don't like your humor, you're sick and I want them to ban you so I don't have to read your posts anymore. Also, your posts are too long. Oh and I hate you.

That is really the ONLY thing you say in any of your posts to me, with absolutely zero new content whatsoever... so, while I'm trying to save your time, return the favor and paste that from here on out.
