Is the PS3 Worth Getting?

First off, I'm not that interested in the PS3 to play games. I'm more interested in its Bluray/DVD/SACD capabilities. For $599 it seems like you get a lot of bang for you buck when you consider there aren't any sub $500 Blu-ray players out yet. Plus I've always wanted to get back into gaming so the PS3 seems like a great choice. But there is so much negativity surrounding the machine it seems. Is it really that bad of a choice? Are the games that terrible?

The games are pants so far.

GT5 and Tekken online should make it a lot more fun :)

A couple of my friends own one. The few games I did play on it were good, but the lack of games out ATM is what's preventing me from purchasing one.

Just hold out another week for Sony's new player:

http://www.techdepot.com/produ...5597119&affid=10000485

I've got a PS3 and it's an excellent Blu-ray player, but I also wanted it for some of the games that will be released next year. So I watch movies now, and play games next year.

Both Panasonic & Pioneer are also soon to release their new Blu-ray players, this should drive down the prices even further on the first generation players, which are still very good machines.

It's a great multimedia machine but a poor game console being there's currently no games for it.

The only downside of ps3 as a blu-ray player is that it has no built-in IR port and the dvd remote is bluetooth based (so if you use a harmony remote or something ....) otherwise it's excellent with both blu-ray and dvd. Web browser isn't great but is okay for checking news, email, etc. I don't really game too much so can't comment on that. The build quality is fantastic imo (i expected much worse), and there is no power brick. it also can pull picts, video, and audio from a windows media server on the network.

If you want a Blu-Ray player because of the BD exclusives, get the PS3 or the Samsung BDP-1200 since it has the ReonVX chip for excellent DVD upscaling. Otherwise, I would seriously consider the Toshiba either HD-A2 (HD-DVD) for $250 on Amazon (since its cheap) or the HD-XA2 which also has the ReonVX for stellar DVD upscaling.

I think the ReonVX-based players are becoming very attractive at these price points; even if the HD format they play flops eventually you're still left with a top notch DVD player.

Costco has the HD-A2 for $250 out the door and you get 5 free HD-DVDs with it.

+ Bluray
+ DVD upscaling
+ Media streaming
+ Streaming to PSP
+ Linux
+ Fully upgradeable harddrive
+ Large range of gaming genres
+ Strong developer support

- Price
- Still early in the software cycle

I'm loving my PS3, and I wouldn't say the games are terrible at all. There's definitely something for everybody right now, but you will need to go for the PSN games if you want to experience the full range of what it has to offer.

The games are actually good, it's just that most of them are cross-platform.

So if you already have a 360, while it's working you won't get any extra value out of the cross-platform games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Oblivion, Armored Core 4, etc.

If you don't have a PS2 you'll gain access to that library by getting the PS3, including God of War 1-2, Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, Final Fantasy X,X-2,XII, etc.

Edit: FYI, Netflix is a great place to rent blu-ray and HD-DVD. They carry all US releases and don't charge extra for high-def vs. DVD discs.

I think I'm going to wait a couple months and see if the PS3 drops in price at all. I've always loved PS exclusive titles like MGS and FF so I am very excited about getting back into it all. Now that most of the major bugs with the PS3 are ironed out it really seems like a fool-proof way to go to enjoy the latest in high-definition content.

But damn Crutchfield has a Toshiba HD-DVD player for $200 after rebates (w/ 5 free movies). Makes the decision a bit tougher.

Get both :)

Note that others have said the 5 free discs take up to 3 months to arrive though.

My main hesitations on getting the Toshiba HD-DVD are that it's only 1080i not -p, and that blu-ray is way ahead in the war: disc sales are 2 to 1 in blu-rays favor for 2007, not counting bundled discs.

But with Netflix you could rent the 200+ HD-DVD discs out so far, and as many more that come out before the format shuts down.

Why not consider an Xbox 360 with the $160 USB HD-DVD attachment?
Unless you're really stuck on Blu-ray, I'd go with that. Far better games, from what I've read.

For a high def player, hell yes. The PS3 just got a major update that fixed 99% of its problems. It upscales everything, and does it very well, At a cheaper price than other competitors. For games, well, the heavy hitters are coming out 2007 Q3 and Q4/2008 Q1/2 so you can think on that.

i really like my ps3. i'm renting blu-ray movies from netflix which is great cause they dont charge extra and the quality difference is astounding. i'm not a hardcore gamer or anything, right now i have motorstorm and tekken 5(psn download for only $20). those two games are awesome and i'm having a lot of fun with those. also i didn't own a ps2 so i borrowed a lot of my friends ps2 games which are some of the best games ever (GTA:SA, MSG3, GoW, Soul Caliber 3, DMC3). i have enough games to last me a long time between the ps2 and ps3 games. :)

If the PS3 is as loud as the 360 (I don't know) then I wouldn't bother. The 360 has an additional drive for $200 and for movie viewing, I wouldn't bother. I couldn't imagine running that loud ass device and watch a movie.

Stand Alone units.... Soon enough, I expect cheap units faster than when DVD came out.

If so, then yeah... (Compared to my previous post). $600 for a BR player and gaming machine... Why not.

Get the HD-DVD player. That's a great deal and the lowest I've seen it yet. You can always get a bluray player when they come down in price if you want.

its actually a very well designed and built machine. i was kinda nervous because of all the problems with the ps2 but the ps3 is rock solid. its dead quiet and stays cool.
