I have both a Sony PS3 & a Toshiba HD-A1 HDDVD player hooked up to a 60 inch Sony SXRD TV & I cant tell the difference between the 1080p picture coming from the PS3 & the 1080i picture coming from the Toshiba-both look equally great. The PS3 makes a great cheap Bluray player but the picture sucks with regular DVDs-the Toshiba does a much better job of upconversion with standard def. dvds.

Did you get the latest patch? Apparently, it makes up conversion near perfect.

(edit) <echo> Have you looked at DVDs after installing the PS3 1.8 firmware? It added upscaling, and most people agree that the results are excellent. </echo>

Noise level: after 2 hours of playing a blu-ray disc I can hear PS3's the fan if I mute my receiver, so it's not dead silent. The DVD/blu drive is very quiet though, and the fan isn't noticeable if there is any sound at all.

Yep-it now upconverts to 1080p but the picture still sucks compared to the HD-A1's upconversion.

Are you using component cables or hdmi cable? The PS3 doesn't upscale all dvds when using component cables.

If you prefer the Toshiba's upscaling over the PS3, that's one thing - but to say the PS3 sucks is a pretty strong opinion for something that I know to be very good.

odd thats not what people on AVS were saying. many said teh PS3 was better then the a1's.

even if yo do not thinks so (a few did not) it is far from sucking. its rather good.

My wife (from the kids) got me me a PS3 for fathers day. i am impressed with the upscalling. just wish that there was more blu-ray movies and the rental places carried them.

Im using HDMI

The PS3 doesnt suck by any means. I think its a fantastic Bluray player. I just think its not as good as my Toshiba HD-A1 at upconverting DVDs
