Is the PS3 two year extended warranty worth $45.99?

I've had my PS3 for about 6 months. I still have some time left on the free PS Plus trial and they are offering a 2 year extended warranty for $45.99.

1. Is this a good deal?
2. Can I buy the warranty with a $50 Playstation Network Card?
3. Are there other warranty services that I should consider?

OT: 4. What should I do with the change from the $50 card?

If it's a slim, probably not. 15% of the console cost for a system that has a pretty low failure rate doesn't seem worth it to me.

No. It's pretty stable and even if it breaks I believe Sony charges $100 to fix most issues out of warranty IIRC. Somebody else may know better but that sounds right to me.

If it still covers accidents it's worthit IMO.

I haven't bought a console in quite some time, but I used to always buy the extended warranty from the store in case one of my friends broke it or in case I accidentally dropped it and it actually broke or something.

I don't know if store warranties still cover accidents though.

The only time I ever had to use it was with a Dreamcast and I've bought one with every new system since my first Super NES in 1993. It may also increase the value when selling.

schmuck.

i've had my 60gb ps3 since like 8 months after it came out and have never had an issue. so from personal experience, i'd say no.

The PS3 is bound to get marked down soon, maybe $250 or $200 if you notice most big retailers are now offering coupons worth $50 to $100 back and/or games. The current price is too high to stay. Bottom line no its not worth $45.

I bought my launch model PS3 used on eBay about 4-5 months after it was released, and its still chugging along just fine about 4.5 years later. I'd say you probably don't need it.

I actually got it for the discounted price with the free plus membership. My slim ps3 has been making some weird noises lately and 2 extra years of coverage isnt bad for a peace of mind of everything being covered.

Thanks for the input everyone! My PS3 is the slim version and I bought it a amazon around x-mas for $300 with the $100 store credit.

Does anyone have input on questions 2,3 and 4 if I decide to go with the warranty?

Squaretrade is a popular 3rd party warranty service that offers 30% off coupons from time to time. Keep an eye on sites like slickdeals for that. Not sure how the price would compare to Sony's, probably a little cheaper after the coupon?

And once you add the $50 card to your wallet you can spend the leftovers on pretty much anything on the PSN store. With $4 you can rent a movie or buy a few minis or avatars/themes or something. PSN games rarely go on sale for less than $5, but I guess it happens from time to time.

Stores make most of their money off of extended warranties, not actual merchandise. That should tell you all you need to know.

That said, it might actually be worth it for an Xbox. Since they seem to have a failure rate of about 95%.

Yeah, not worth it (from personal experience).

Depending on the games you purchase for it, I would suggest using that PSN card to purchase select DLC's for you games.

with the cost of the ps3 it's not worth it.

I've had my PS3 since I bought it for $525 and have had no issues with it. It's the best DVD player I've ever owned.

I bought the 2 year warranty from PSN+, it was $15 off. For $35 it is a good deal. If anything happens to my slim in those three years it will be much cheaper than a new PS3. I was paranoid after going through two dead 360s and my buddies dead PS3 laser.

I don't know, I've had 1 360 and 1 ps3 break. Neither one of them seem particularly well built to me but I still don't buy the extended warranties.
