Verizon is CDMA.

The Unlocked or Google Play Editions are GSM.

Verizon prepaid Moto G is completely locked down. I believe you're not even allowed to use it on Verizon postpaid. The Boost version is popular because it's been really cheap and also easy to flash to use it on MVNOs (mostly PagePlus).

Locked down just means you can't use it out of the country and only on version plans?

Locked down means you can usually only use it on the carrier. But as far as day to day usage goes they are the same.
