It can:

1) Use more than 4GB of RAM

2) Run 64bit applications (mostly for the purpose of #1)

3) Allows 32bit applications that are large address aware to use up to 4GB of RAM

4) Feature PatchGuard kernel patch protection, which makes it harder for malware to compromise the kernel.
