Tell me if I got this right. I'm researching Geforce 2 MX cards because they sound like excellent value for money and the best cards to upgrade my machine.

Nvidia is a company that invented the Geforce GPU chip. They bring out the chip and other manufacturers actually make the final cards that you can buy or does Nvidia actualy make a card also that you can buy?

I was sure that the "NVIDIA GeForce2 MX (NV11)" was an actual video card because Sharky Extreen did a review of it but I couldnt really tell for sure. And what I cant figure out is if NVIDIA actually do make a card why dont they have it on their website?

I'm totally confused, please somebody tell me what the situation is with this :)

Thanks,

(yes I do sound like a retard I know)

The Geforce2 MX is the actual chipset that Nvidia produces. Nvidia does not make any retail cards (they make reference cards which are basically engineering samples for other companies who make the retail cards)

Many manufactuers make video cards based on the GF2 MX.

Ahhhhhh so when websites review a card they are often talking about the reference card that the manufacturer has sent them.

It seems strange to me that NVIDIA would not make a card themselves. Surely would be in a prime position to make the best card that everyone would trust to buy. Maybe I should be working for their marketing department :D

Thanks.

Some of the MX cards are different and vary from the refernce card given to the companies by Nvidia. This is shown in the Prophet II mx. it carries 5.5ns ram while most other mx cards carry 6ns ram.

The idea about nvidia just making their own cards is slihgtly overrated. Most peoploe here would buy the best card available even if it were from a company thats not that well known. Also 3dfx has tried this trick with their purchase of STB a while ago. Look at them now, most people here would get the MX based on price. Don't get me wrong the 3dfx card is a great card but I'd rahter save 150 and get teh MX.
