Is the news media biased, or just stupid on firearms?

As the liberal crap storm for more gun control whips into a frenzy, I see a common pattern, and that is the spread of incorrect information.

One opinion said the AR was designed for killing at close range. In the military trials, bullet performance was judged at 200 meters. How is 200 meters close range?

Another opinion piece said high capacity magazines have no place in hunting. I don't guess the author has ever seen the videos of people hunting wild hogs from helicopters. I dont guess the author saw pictures of the LA riots where store owners were protecting their property with semi-auto rifles and high capacity magazines.

Are the authors of the articles blind, ignorant, or just plain stupid?
 
I doubt most people consider hog helicopter hunting (h^3!) as the general description of hunting.

But yes, the news media is biased towards sensationalism. This was a sensational attack and so you will see a media frenzy.

Exactly. The news media is sensationalist because it sells. You could choose to make no mention of gun control, but you wouldn't get anywhere. You start talking about gun control and you light up the blogs, you get people to your website, you get people riled up. It takes almost no effort to get a gun fanatic truly inflamed. And they don't turn you off, they actually go spread the word and more people tune if, if only to get mad at you!

Also really, the media has gotten lazy and making completely correct statements takes more time than they'll bother with.

But now actually is a good time to talk about gun control. An intelligent dialogue though and not crazy extreme from either side.
 
The AR is desgned to shoot a projectile just like a single shot 22, both can kill, to deny some firearms are just more efficient at it is a boldface lie.
Having High caps is one of the things that make it more efficient, also undeniable.

The debate is a much higher level than worrying about every firearm nuance AFAIC, Its about what kind of society do you want? We just got our long gun registry overturned here in Canada, because A it cost to much for B how effective it was in reducing gun crime.

Neither. Y'all got a big problem and clearly most of y'all know it. Merely pointing it out has nothing to do with Liberal Bias or Stupidity(although Reporters are often ignorant on what they're reporting on).

Of course it is. This is why we have days and days of this coverage but never even a mention of the 17,000 or so other murders that happen every year in this country.

They aren't so much biased lib or con as they are seeking ratings, fame, money, book and movie deals.

And ignorant. "AK-47 type weapon" was a reporter statement mentioned in another thread.

They would ban costumes at cinemas.

I have said this before and wil say this again:

Guns have nothing dto do in the hands of civilians.
Anyone so sacred that the feel they need a gun...should grow a pair.

But it must be nice to live in a county were every nutjob can arm himself..and play he is in a movie.

So only the military should get weapons, like the fort hood shooter?

If someone is a "nutjob", then the background check should filter that person out.

How many lives is it ok to waste? Lets start with the military. When the military and police hand in their weapons to protect innocent civilians, then I will hand in mine.

You understand that the US culture (excluding gun culture) is worlds apart from say your country? That if we took the exact same culture and demographics here, and sent it over to your country, there'd be the same massive increase in crime and killings because of it?

Guns aren't the problem. There's like 300 million examples of that (or close to that number), along with orders of magnitude more ammunition which actually does the killing, to prove that point. People are the problem, and thus culture and demographics.

The guy is a moron, although it can be used at closer ranges the M-16 which it is modeled after was supposedly designed to be relatively light and easy to bring to bear on a target quickly. All of my reading indicates that it filled a need to have a weapon usable at a wide variety of ranges so his statement about it being primarily for close range is false and mistaken.


Liberals who aren't familiar with firearms should familiarize themselves with them because when they make common layman mistakes they just make the rest of us look bad.

As for high capacity magazines? well I'm more flexible on that. I heard a person who called into a radio show on the subject.

He uses a military style weapon to clear out animals that would damage some land he watches over. However he prefers the 10 round magazines because they don't extend out from the weapon as far as the larger capacity magazines and he has noticed that the weapon doesn't malfunction as much with the 10 round magazines.

When we look, we see Americans killing Americans at alarming rates.
A lot of them have America divided up into a hundred pieces.
It's Obama's fault, it's the LIBS fault, its the inner city people fault, its the meth heads etc.

edit- and now someone will tell me to shut up because wtf do I know I'm just a jealous Canadian

I think you have a valid point, America is divided, not just on firearms, but on a lot of stuff.

What would someone from inner city New York know about a coyote raiding a farmers chicken coop in a rural area?

We are divided demographically, financially, racially, and through ideology.

That is part of the problem with the States. There are us, them, those, and them over there.

I see three major divisions - race, religion and economics.

When the blacks were freed, instead of treating them as people with rights, the whites continued to look for ways to oppress blacks. Even though slavery was abolished in the 1860s, their rights were not affirmed until the 1960s with the civil rights movement.

Then we have the illegal immigrant population.

Then we have groups who refuse to incorporate into society, such as the amish and ultra-orthodox jews.

Then we have the inner city gangs, poverty and drug users.
