from what I have seen the only real advantage of 2003 Pro is in the junk email settings in Outlook. Apparently the new spam filters actually work in 2003.

The only real benefit to a non business user ( I am making an assumption here) is the interface and options of Outlook. I would upgrade Outlook only.

It looks worse (it seems to follow your them in XP), DRM is good and bad depending on your viewpoint, I hear Outlook's IMAP support is still sub-par.

I use the SpamBayes Outlook Addin with Outlook XP and it works quite well. I couldn't imagine paying more money for the same functionality as a free plug-in.

The core applications (Word, Excel etc), other than Outlook, are practically the same. Outlook is the only compelling reason for a desktop user to upgrade IMO. Business users will see a benefit in the collaboration tools offered by the new Office. So long as the business decides to support these features at the backend. All in all, If you have Office XP, I wouldn't upgrade. Unless I did an upgrade of Outlook. If you have an older version of Office, the upgrade to 2003 would be a better choice.

The only real benefits in all the apps are for business professionals. For the normal end-user, Outlook got an overhaul. All in all, if you have XP, and aren't getting a student discount, stick with it.
