Well I teach Saturday school to kids who are failing and tomorrow is the last day and I wanted to do something kinda fun. I don't really have time to give out permission slips, perhaps another movie that is math-related and possibly PG or G?

Maybe Good Will Hunting?
I'd see that as a more positve film, and probably less controversial. There are some sex scenes there as well though.

I guess I'm not sure what kind of message you might be sending about math by showing a film where the primary issue is mental illness.

That's rated R.

Really? Wow.
I guess there was some gratuitess violence & cussing. I don't remember the sex scenes being that bad. Maybe you could get a cleaned up version.

Well, I haven't been an 8th grader for awhile, but I don't see anything wrong with it. Maybe a little risque at points. I'd watch it yourself first.

From what I understand, the book portrays some aspects of Dr. Nash's life that may not be appropriate for 8th graders. But I haven't read it yet.

Do you mean his homosexual tendencies and ability to communicate with aliens?

Hadn't heard the bit about aliens.
But yea, Gattacca would be a good choice.

Gattaca is really more of a Biology movie. If you want math, perhaps get the movie about the inner-city school where all of its students passed the AP Calc exam(the name escapes me).

I would have recommened that if I had thought the students didn't want to gouge out their eyes with their compasses

Well I was thinking "Straw Dogs", but that might not be appropriate for a class of 8th graders.

edit: have their parents sign a permission slip, as a past teacher myself I advise you protect your ass.

Very true...

Don't get in a bad position over something dumb...

Stand and Deliver has been shown to death to these kids and I was trying to find something different.

Stand and Deliver is also entire bullcrap. They changed the storyline to spin the story a different way. I hate this piece of crap movie.

Since Pi isn't an option, you can always do Rain Man or something.

Rain Man ... great, another movie that whose lesson is that you have to be mentally ill to be good at math

And Pi was ... interesting. Could've been alot better without all that art-house crap.

I haved mixed feelings on this. The movie does have a mathematical component to it... but I think that is just part of the main character and not so much the basis of the movie. But besides the math aspect in the movie, I don't think students should be watching movies in math class... I think they should be learning math.

Yea, but when I was 14 I considered everything to be fine! Not to nick-pick, but what a 14 year old considers "appropriate" doesn'r really matter. ;)

A Beautiful Mind is more about schizophrenia than about mathematics... it just happens he was a mathematical genius. I really can't see what they would get out of the movie.

Rambo 2! Have them count the dead or something. ;) :D

Ya, I find that showing a movie in Math kinda odd. Though "A beautiful Mind" is a great movie, it would likely seem boring to most 14 year olds. If you want to show movies, it seems to me that you should start a "Film Appreciation" class or club.
