Is the mail list over at www.egroups.com still active?

On the RC5 page linked from Anandtech's front page it
points to a thread that links to sign up with www.egroup.com
I had to do a search for "anandtech" to find our RC5 group.
If the mail list from there is still the one we use I think
the mail list sign-up could be more thoroughly explained.
I see this as a way of maintaining contact with our
membership
without having to bother getting addresses
from dnet.

Also, the "For more information" link at our page at
www.egroup.com (The Anandtech Rc5 mail list page) points
to the Distributed Computing forum on the gisystech
forum - needs to be updated.

divide_by_zero: It's still active... the PTE for viztech was setup using a combo of that and IRC (I think ViRGE and the others used IRC for that as well...)

I agree it would be a nice way to keep contact, but it's got one serious flaw... the e-mail it sends are full of HTML banners and stuff that aren't real nice :( Thus the emails look more like the debated spam issue than anything else :(

One other major flaw is that it isn't a TA only list... there's DPC members that have signed up for it too I think...

Otherwise if you can live with all that it's GREAT ;)

What I would really love is a new newsletter/maillist that didn't have all these flaws and that were TA ONLY ...

Could we create a moderated mailing list where membership has to be approved by a moderator. Perhaps you have to have joined teamanandtech at dnet and maybe have to be submitting blocks
to join the mailing list. Anything we do has to be fairly open to allow the inclusion of new members to our team so there will always be a way that *those* guys will be able to get on the mailing list but at least if members are submitting blocks to TA we will be getting something from *those* guys for access to the list.

Now if we just uderstood Dutch we could understand what they are doing as much as they understand what we are up to! ;)

Hehe... but we do understand duthc! ;) We've got members that speak dutch, Hawkeye speaks dutch (he's belgian) and if I don't remember totally wrong PeterN is dutch... there might be others too...

A moderated list would be swell! Hopefully we could get some database functionality in there so we didn't have to maintain it by hand... that way we could do weekly updates to the list and peope who haven't supplied blocks in say a month could be sent an email asking if they've forgotten about us maybe, or asking if they don't wanna be part of the team anymore... And we could also detect "traitors" by checking up on the members... that way we could remove anyone not supplying blocks for TA

This would of course put some demands on the people making this, and I'm sorry to say I don't have the skills :( otherwise this would be exactly the kind of thing I would like to do for the TeAm ...

I'll point this thread to people and hope we'll get some good feedback!

I would be happy to act as a spy for TA on the DPC-forums in some kind of moderated mailing list.
I was recently promoted to "Head of Galactic Intelligence" within Federation ranks. I can't see why all of TA can't benefit from that. :D:D:D

It is easy to change the settings of the egroups from non-moderated to moderated.
Also can the owner of the egroup remove receiving addresses from the list. That way know DPC members (or others) can be removed it desired.

Also I would be happy to set up and moderate a completely new list, that is completely moderated. This way we can start all over again. It will take a bit longer, but the risk of having non-TA-members is much less. Also we will be sure of having only people on the list that have approved of receiving mail from TA.
WE can send a message through all channels TA has at it's disposal to let old TA-members know of the list-existence.

Peter.

YIEAH!

Now we're getting somewhere!

PeterN:

I'd like to ask admiral LeBlatt (it's LB who's the admiral right?!?) to promote you to official SpyMASTER for TA

LeBlatt: is that ok? ;)

And your idea about a new moderated list or moderating the one we have is a good one too!

Now we just have to wait for the americans to wake up so we can get some of them in here as well ;)

Twoface,

I think you've got to ask our beloved Admiral MadMerc and our honoured Vice-Admiral Engineer, although I don't have the feeling they would disapprove. :D:p:D:p

I will make preperations for creating the new mailing list, that is completely moderated by me, I guess.

Whenever things are set up I will get back with more news.... :p
If we decide to use the old list in a renewed form, I can always use the new list for something else or give it up all together. :p:p

The base of this idea is good, but I still have a few objections.

First : most users on Onelist represent the core of TA, the die-hard people who would do anything for it. As such, I think it's not that usefull to check if they have completed blocks in the last month, because we almost know for certain they have. The rest of our once large group needs to be targetted, as proposed by DanC. This has been shot down by DNet, for perfectly understandable reasons. Unless we can come up with a plan to get those old people working again, or to get new forces, we'll keep losing ground to other teams :(

Second : about holding the DPC out. AFAIK, the DPC have never made abuse of the onelist mailing list. Kicking them out would only aggrevate the tension between our two teams. And if they really want, they can add a 386SX25 to crack under TA, join the list and still read what we have to say.

Third : if we really want to have a place for TA people only - and I don't see why that's needed, all special actions have always been succesfully coordinated from the #teamanandtech channel or the onelist group - we could use a private message board on the up and comming new webbox from Mika. Some sort of board where you have to log in with a username and a password (still, it can be easely broken).

Don't take this personally though, it's a nice idea, but IMO, not the way to get more people to TA.

Hawkeye:

Valid points!

First tho' what I think this is is a way to keep members up to date... I've read all the discussions about how we've lost members and we should get in touch with them... What I intended this list to be is more of a way not to lose any more members... a way to get the currently active members kept up to date... We've lost a LOT of members and how we can get in contact with them is still a debate, I don't want to get into that here since people have so hot feelings on the subject! What I propose is a way to insure we don't lose that many members again! I want to keep the current memberbase and I want all the new members we get to have a "newsletter" they can sign up for that'll keep them updated and remind them to keep cracking if they reinstall and forget to turn their cow back on... it's as simple as that! ;)

The DPC being in all our ways of communication isn't that big a deal I'll agree... But there are instances when we need our privacy too! I remember one thread where we had a discussion here about internal issues... not that it was a big deal that the DPC read it, but it REALLY pissed some members off that they kept commenting in the thread... and it died because of that before we could get anywhere :( That's primarily why I think we need a place where we can coordinate the team privately... not because there are so much secret stuff going on

More input is needed! come on people let's hear your thoughts!

JimMC,

I'll personally vouche for your position within the Federation Ranks.
Just look at the Feds website (link below), which hot tub babes you will have to control!! :p:p:p

With these two it won't be too difficult to join our tiny team :D:D

Regarding the idea:
I have read all the ideas and opinions in this thread and remembered some other in previous threads.

The idea of keeping in contact with people that cruch for TA or have some sort of affiliation with TA appeals to me.
I've been giving it some thought and this came upfront:

First:
I think the discussion forum is a good place to fight out the differences, if the people involved will not react to DPC messages that are ment to sway on somebody. If the messages are ment in a nicely manner than why don't use the arguments made, even if they come from a DPC'er. I don't ee any harm in that.
If we want a totally secure place for secret events then the new webbox is the right place IMO.
Regarding the letter, I will be building up the list by hand. A lot of work, but I think a personal message from a newsletter moderator won't offend anyone. And if it does, than the damage to TA will be minimized.

  • The letter must be on (I think) a weekly basis. Then everyone can be informed about TA, but will not become saturated with it.
  • There is a possibility for everyone to send in news, but the moderator (with some kind of editing team of two or three people) will decide what will be published when.
  • There should be a number of permanent items, such as position of TA - /. - DPC, number of new active members to TA and more. This could look like the Hitparades of DPC. I do need help on this, but it will be an incentive for new members.
  • Once in a while a special bulletin (let's say once every two months or so) will be sent out with all the features and specialties of TA, like forums, FAQs (like Paulsons :D), ICQ and IRC channels, stats server and more.
  • Special achievements or events will be mentioned, like the PTE in OGR, the dump of The Federation, the possible assimilation of DanC and Optoman of very large herds and so on.
  • The newsletter can also be used to focus people on interesting threads on the forum (either TA or DPC), including the link.

If I can come up with other stuff I will edit this message. Better I will start a new thread, but that will not until tomorrow, because now I have to sign off.

If someone has any ideas, please let them be know.

Humm, after reading this, I think we could definately use something private. I'll see what I can do once the site is up.
