Is the Intel E7200 wolfdale the way to go ?

Hi all.

i am planning on building my first system and was looking at CPU's. I'm a noob and need your advice guys.

I want to keep it as cheap as I can, but I'ld like to try some OC'ing and play some nice games.

So, will the E7200 be good for me ?

These are the other component's I've thought about - All input will be highly appreciated.

- Gygabyte EP35-ds3l
- Asus Radeon 4850 (not really cheap, but I won't plan to upgrade the video card anytime soon )
- 2Gb memory DDR2-800 (cheap it is, but is it a wise pick ?)
- Seagate 250Gb sata3 7200.10

I have a PSU for a couple of month now - FSP AX-450PN - but not sure is it's on par with the new hardware.

should be fine... with a little oc it will be a very nice platform for gaming...

e7200 and e2180 ($70 at newegg) are both good overclockers.
Everything else looks good. dd2-800 should be good enough for overclocking e7200 (at 1:1 will give you 3.8ghz - about the max for e7200).
For Asus 4850, look in hot deals section as there's a $20 coupon code for $145 AR, which is cheap enough.
spend $20-$30 more and get a 500gb hd for all your games and multimedia.
Can't find info on the 450pn but the 400pn seems to have 27A on 12V rail, which is enough for 4850.

E7200 is a very nice chip and a great choice. Having the 45nm and 65w is a better choice over the e2160. Not to say the e2160 is a bad choice but with newer tech. I have both and use the older board of what you are using and The E7200 runs cool and a great overclocker. Get it man! 🙂

Also, the FSP 450w PSU should be plenty. I've got a 430w Antec that powers an overclocked E8400, 8800GT, 2 HDs, DVD burner, 5 fans, etc.

Not all power supplies are the same. I've seen 400W rated power supplies with only 17 or 18A on 12V rail, which wouldn't be enough for more than a 8800gs/9600gt.

I just picked up an E7200 with ECS mobo at Fry's for 119 the other day. It's been great so far, although I haven't really had a chance to test its overclocking potential as of yet.

As will I... like RallyMaster, I've got my first Intel build planned in about a week or so and plan to use the E7200 as well. The price/performance is unbelievable, regardless of the MoBo choice (still undecided personally, prob an Asus P5 variant).

Different mobo... but everything else looks very similar to my plans (2GB DDR2-800, Seagate HDD, Radeon GPU).

Very much interested to see how the first build goes! Good luck! 🙂

If you keep within specs, ie; Fsb, voltages and heat, you should be ok. Just make sure you read and understand the "sticky" post from "Greysky" at the top of this forum. Never be afraid to ask questions. I do🙂

For those who haven't bought yet, you might consider waiting til the end of the month for the expected intel price cuts (expected around the 21 or 22). Also, you might consider the western digital 320gb or 640gb hdd depending on your price constraints. The hdd remains one of the slowest components in your system and getting one of the fastest/cheapest ones around might give your system a little extra responsiveness.

I'm also planning on building a new machine and I'm in the same boat as the OP.

My biggest concern is whether to get a E7200 or a E8400. The price difference is $60 and I plan to keep stock coolers. I don't mind overclocking as long as it's stable. Should I just go with the cheaper E7200 and o/c to it's potential or bite the $60 bullet and get the E8400 and try to overclock to it's potential?

This machine is also going to have Gigabytte GA-EP35-DS3L, 4GB DDR2-800, 4850 as well as using the Antec Sonata III (w/ 500W PSU). It will be used for gaming as well as MySQL work and I hope to install Vista 64bit edition so I may use 8GB of ram in the future.

If you don't feel like overclocking, the E8400 will last you a while. However, if you do like OCing, the E7200 has the potential to beat a stock E8400 and could make a more satisfying experience.

stock cooler for Wolfdales is crappy, get an E7200 and a decent cooler.

I'm posting from my new (and first) built. Everything went smooth.
Now i have to learn about ocing that thing.

No need to say that it's different than my old PIII 800MHz with 256Mb ram... 😱

Congrats!:thumbsup: Get some screenie shots going on so we can see your progress. The E7200 is pretty easy to OC. You should be able to get it to 3.2 - 3.4 without problems. 🙂

Screw that. Go for 3.6. 🙂

You can get 3.2 with an E2xxx or E4xxx CPU, although not easily with the stock heatsink.

As I totally agree,🙂 but like I said, "without problems" I am sure that 3.6 is starting to get the voltage up a bit more and heat will be an issue "if" he uses a stock HSF.

Are these specs wrong Voltage 0.85V - 1.5V
On my E3110@4050 things start heating up at over 1.4v
Set volts to 1.44 hit 4400 to run a few 3d marks then lowered it.
