Is the Intel 80gb THE DRIVE to get these days?

at the ~$220 price point, is the Intel 80gb X25-M THE BEST overall SSD?

is it the best bang/buck @ $220?

btw i'm typing from my new Logitech Wave keyboard, and i'm typing this extra just because its so comfortable to type on. ok i'll stop now =)

I just ordered my first SSD 5 minutes ago, and ended up not getting an intel one. From everything I've read, the 80GB X-25 is a DAMN good drive for the money, but $220 was just too much money for me. I ended up getting a 60GB OCZ Agility for $130 after rebate, which is a good deal more affordable for me. As far as I'm concerned, I doubt I'd notice the performance difference between the Agility and an X-25 nearly as much as I'll notice the difference between either one of them and the slow mechanical drive I'm upgrading from. The extra 20GB would've been nice as well, but I looked at my current OS drive and it's only using about 40GB when ignoring all media files, so 60 was more than enough for me.

That being said, if the price difference isn't a big deal for you, you might as well go with the intel drive. It is undeniably the better of the two.

are there different revisions among the Intel G2 drives that i need to worry about? (kinda like, "steppings" that correlates to CPUs that OC better?)

Not that I have heard of, unless you are planning on overclocking the SSD controller; then stepping might matter.

no what i'm saying is are there specific revisions or different versions among the Intel G2 drives? Or does every single Intel G2 X25-M perform the same?

Older ones may lack the newest firmware, which includes TRIM support.

The ADATA drives are also looking like good value drives, but not sure about reliability. Bought one for my laptop. Read Anand's reviews: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3751&p=3

The only clear cut "winner" is more than most sane people would pay for. The Sandforce controller based drives are the best, but aren't worth the expense. Both the intel and Vertex trade blows.

Do you guys think the upcoming OCZ Vertex 2 Pro will drive down the price of current $200 drives? Its supposed to be the fastest drive out @ 100gb.

Am i just being stupid and should get the 80gb Intel today?

It is the drive to get.

The only thing your need to remember when comparing SSDs is read not write speeds that matters. Don't ever get fooled by write speeds because you'll never have the chance to utilize it.

The vertex 2 will NOT drive down intel's price. OCZ will probably price the Vertex 2 higher than Intel. The next price cut will be in December when Intel's 25nm chips come.

I've got two of the Intel 160 x-25M G2's. Just get it, you won't be disappointed. Just remember to install the firmware, enable AHCI and run the "Intel SSD" tool once a week and it is the best price performance you will get right now IMO.

Yes...it is...the drive to get.

I got my Intel G2 80GB in Dec...and just ordered an Intel 40GB for playing around with...

Screw all others ;0

LOL...
