Is the intel 7700k integrated graphics strong enough for stable 4K playback?

I don’t really game anymore but if getting a dedicated graphics card would help a lot with stable 4K video playback I will get another one. If I ever game again too.

I don't think it will I think you need a 900 series or better for PlayReady 3 support when I was looking it up a couple weeks ago.

Ignore me. I was thinking of Skylake not supporting it and Intel using the HD600 series since. But actually the integrated GPU on Kaby Lake and later is PlayReady 3 Ready (might even since updated Skylake to support it as well).

Depends if you are only ever using this as a Stream viewer and not doing anything graphics related outside this then probably not. I would wait till you have something the iGPU can't do and then get a working dGPU then. Would suck to get the 980 now and find out later that neither of them work with something, when you can get by on the igpu now.

I don't believe that the GTX 980 has a hardware decoder for x265 so not a good choice for 4k playback. Nvidia added the x265 decoder block to later GPUs (most 10xx series and I believe GTX 960) - you need to check.

Actually Kabylake's iGPU was the first to support Netflix 4K and Playready 3.0.

Correct. Only the GTX 950 and GTX 960 had the x265 hardware decoder. I bought the GTX 950 for my HTPC project in January of 2016. I also have a GTX 970 that doesn't have it. I currently have a 1080 Ti in my main rig that most definitely has the hardware decoder.
