Is the incense in buddhist temples bad for you?

Well um yeah, Happy Chinese New Years for you all. So um, I went to another temple, and with all the smoke coming out of the incense that people light up, I'm just wondering if it's bad for you like cigarettes are (even though they release different chemicals). Also, are they bad to be burned indoors with no windows open?

Gung hei fat choi ;) (got it off of my friend :D)

Anyways, my mom (we are not Buddhist, we are Hindus) burns at least 2 - 4 incense sticks every morning, and I must tell you it smells good, but she has (I think) been doing it all her life, and I don't see any respiratory problems developing, or her complaining of any.

Also, her father (my maternal grandfather) visits a Hindu temple quite often, and he doesn't seem to have any problems (though the temple is quite smalle, prolly not much bigger than a 4/5 car garage, and fairly open).

Never had any problems with incense smoke in a confined area though, as long as there is a door (and even if the room is barely 25 sq ft. as is the temple room at my house)

hehe, my mom and dad have smoked for the last 40+ years and show no signs of respiratory problems. I'm sure they're OK too

well, um, yea, like, you know.

incense is ok in controlled doses. the smoke contains some health hazards (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) that can cause cancer.

burning ANYTHING indoors with no windows open is bad. it eats up oxygen and will probably fill the room with nasty stuff that you wouldnt want to breathe it.
