Is the high clock speed on processors really that necessary???

I personally thinks the clock speed on the processors have gone waaayyy over what we relly need, cuz the other components cant follow, like graphics cards for instance... Just a humble opinion.

I see very few people indeed who really need the extra speed we are all getting these days. Only greedy kiddie gamers. Perhaps some graphic designers or heavy photoshop artists are using these speeds without wasting time, but these people are like 0.1% of users.

I would have to agree for most 500 or greater is overkill. I still sell quite a few 500's and down to those who just surf or do office apps. But it's sure nice knowing my processor isn't the problem when I'm fragging the hell out of someone.

I can run at 1GHz, but it doesn't help my gaming out one bit compared to 850MHz with an Athlon/ Voodoo 5agp. I think you're right about other components needing to catch up, but I like that the cpu's are still powerful when they become affordable. I'm also enjoying seeing AMD kick Intel's buttocks, since I've never owned an Intel (mainly due to price).

this is a hardware forum with a lot of hardware fanatics. You're probably asking the wrong people :p

Celstars right. besides, sooner or later, ur 1ghz cpu will be the limiting factor of ur future generation video card equiped system.

Celstar probably has a point. However my PIII 650/866 & etc. is the first comp I've had where common operations are instantaneous, or nearly so, like opening IE in less than one second, or like having OE check my mail by the time it's done opening, and that be a couple of seconds, or open a medium sized Access database in less than two seconds. Now it's nearly fast enough, and I haven't said anything about games, just really basic stuffs. What about the poor no-bies who buy a box with so much pre-loaded software that they boot to ~80% resources even before they do anything? I don't think the technology is where it should be yet. I think Joe User should be able to assume photo-realistic 3D, the best of sound, silky smooth DVD, and... , and... , and... , and no perceptible 'hourglass' ever before we consider this technology mature.

We, my friends, are the beta testers. When we finally have no reason to seek more speed, this pie is baked.

Until i can churn out TA CUBE's block output in 1 day on 1 computer, it's not enough. LOL

Homer's right, with my PIII 700@875 it is really the first time my system has felt fast enough. It opens all the office apps almost instantly, performs simple database ops quickly and even reboots fast! :)

And the games are also nice, but that isn't everyones focus...
