Is the future bride supposed to give the groom an engagement gift?

So, my best friend finally got engaged yesterday (hallelujah! 🙂 ) and we were all sitting around chatting last night. His now fiance said that she was going to get him a big screen TV as an engagement gift.

I was like, "Wow, that's pretty damn cool". After that, another friend chimed in and said "Didn't you get an engagement gift?" I replied no, because I didn't know that the bride to be giving the groom an engagement gift was something that was done (I'm a guy, I don't know these things).

After that, another friend chimed in and said that his wife (fiance at the time) gave him a big screen TV and another friend said that his fiance gave him a gas grill.

So am I missing out on a "new trend" or has it always been this way? I'm not getting married until June BTW...
