Is the Fatkins fad finally dying?

I hear less and less about this thing these days. I know that a year ago AT was inundated with pro/con Atkins threads, and I just don't seem to come across that much in the media about it anymore. As we all know it's something that a small minority of people have found to work pretty well for them, but ultimately for most people it's not something they are willing or wanting to stick to, so back to pizza and chocolate bars for them.

What's the next diet fad coming into the limelight?

Atkins essentially starves the body, thus it feeds on itself (no "quick" energy, the only thing your eating is protein that mostly goes undigested). Problem is that the body needs fuel and sooner, rather than later, it forces you to eat what it needs.....usually resulting in a pigfest.

Exercise is the cure to any weight problem. Just go for a damned brisk walk for 40 minutes...........

Fewer calories and more exercise will typically always work yet people never seem to catch on to the exercise part.

For me I'm working on a low sodium to keep the ol' blood pressure down.

Yes, like every other diet fad before it, it's seen the end of its 15 minutes. It was the easiest diet ever and most fat Americans STILL couldn't stick to it.

It's dying, but not because it doesn't work. It's fading out because it's too hard to stay on. South Beach has some aspects of Atkins, but it basically says "stop eating unnatural foods made in factories and you'll lose weight," and it's true. Unfortunately people put South Beach and Atkins in the same boat for some reason.

South Beach works, and it's easy to stay on. Go with that if you want a diet :)

none of you listen to bob & tom? The next great diet is the water diet! Nothing but water! You'll lose weight!

really, though, if we implanted every fat person with a tapeworm they'd lose weight.

Have you been to a grocery store lately? Everything is low carb. I just think that low carb diets have become so mainstream that you don't notice the hype anymore.

What's dangerous about that is there is no guideline to what is considered "low carb". Some low carb foods have 1g, some have 18g.

True dat, but it is still a marketing tool. If they are bothering to market low carb, there has to be a target market, no?

I think it was popular because it SOUNDED really easy, but for those who've tried it it's actually incredibly hard. I tried a low carb diet around 7 years ago and it was incredibly difficult--far more hard, for me, than low-calorie eating.

That's because nobody read the freakin' book. They just heard from their friend "You just eat steak and bacon all the time and in two weeks you'll be Charles Atlas."

At the end of the day, Atkins is supposed to be about a lifestyle change - an exercise regimen coupled with determining how much you should eat and exercise in order to maintain your target weight, but once the masses (no pun intended) caught on, they stopped reading after 30 pages.....and that's if they even picked up the book.

I still see carb counts all over everything though.

I was reading an article in the papaer 3-4 months ago that stated the low-carb fad had dropped off much faster than manufacturers had anticipated, leaving a glut of undesirable products.

Really, so it has dropped off then... I honestly expected it to die quickly, but it seemed to me to have a lot of staying power. It was the thing for at least a couple of years wasn't it?

I guess I'd like to see numbers instead of anecdotal like my impressions vs devilsadvocate's.

Hah, like that's healthy.

Like gigapet mentioned it won't last, and the longer you go without caring about your diet the harder it will be to break the habit. I was forced to adopt a healthier approach at 16 and while I was chubbier than most people my age at that time I'm now massively thinner, because my approach has become a real lifestyle, whereas now people finally are chubbing up and realizing that they can't stick to a proper approach.

Yeah, it does seem to have dropped quite a bit in popularity, I suppose....however I'm still following the diet and it works for me...

I tried eating a normal diet, and I started losing weight. either I'll balloon out like my dad did, or I'll stay as skinny as I am now, like my Grandfather.
