is the e6850 just a preoverclocked e6600?

I noticed on the e6850 the strap is 1333 which means the standard ram for it is ddr667 so it runs at 333 fsb. If i raise the fsb with my e6600 to 333 would it preform the same? what makes the e6850 better?

The E6850 is a newer revision and will likely overclock better. The E6600 is being replaced.

in theory yes. change the FSB to 333 and you now have a 6850. :)

would it perform the same? yes!

what makes the 6850 better? lower wattage and less heat output and supposedly better overclocking.

To add a further question to this. What if anything will this do to Northbridge heat? Asus P5b-E's allow 1333 with the latest bios through "overclocking techniques" as they call it. Since the passive NB on these motherboards already run very hot , what will this do to it?

so if you have a e6600 this would be a total waste of money to upgrade? im sure the heat and voltage difference isn't that big of a deal especially if your not aiming for 4 ghz+++ and using air cooling

266 to 333 should not require a bump in the NB voltage... if it does it'll only be very very slight. the heat output increase should only be minimal at most.

if you have an E6600 that's let's say capble of 3.6 ghz, there would really be no need for an E6850 unless you just want to have the newest and best out there and potentially the chance of hitting 3.6+.

you also need ram that can do better than ddr2 800 also, so ya its def not worth the upgrade

I think that if you have a decent e6600 (3.4+) then it's not worth the money to go for a dual core upgrade unless you like burning money. Go with a G0 quad or wait for penryn if you want a reasonable upgrade.

E6850's can overclock to 4.0 GHZ on Air. Which is impressive, but if you have e6600 id wait till next gen.
