Is the dumbing down of technology really good? Or is it just a royal PITA?

[BITCH]I'm all for home & office networking, but should this kind of stuff REALLY be accessible to the average home/office user? I swear, 90% of my calls are just some secretary saying "I can't get connected to the internet." Or some 30 year old FPS gamer that can't connect to his game servers. These people have NO understanding of how their network works, they rely entirely on us to keep them running. They wonder why they have a 169 IP address, & can't ping their router at 10.0.0.1. Hell, I've had someone setting up a network for MCSE training try & pull class A IP's out of his ass at random to use on his network, & then call us to try & figure out why he can't browse the web.

As home & office computing environments get more & more complex, this is going to be more of a problem. The company loses connectivity, & Big Boss #1 tells Hot Blonde Secretary #2 to call tech support & "Get the internet running." Hot Blonde Secretary #2 does what Big Boss #1 tells her to, but one slight problem... She knows nothing about their network config. She doesn't know what IP addressing scheme they're running, she doesn't know if they have a DHCP server, & she doesn't even know what operating system she's running. Everything is "Windows 98" to her. Yes, she looks damned good in the miniskirt. BUT SHE DOESN'T KNOW JACK ABOUT YOUR NETWORK!

I'm not saying people need to be network engineers to have a network, but they should at LEAST have some remote clue how their network is setup, or even where the pieces are.

Do you charge to support that kind of stuff? With my current broadband provider and the one I'm switching to in January, they both made it clear that they don't support in-home networks. They'll charge you if you call them with LAN problems. That seems fair to me.

Nope, it's free support. We have to take the full range of customers, from the admins that just need the command to open up a port, to the secretary that doesn't know a router from a baseball bat.

Think on the bright side, that is one step above a blond that just took a baseball bat to a router..... :)

convince the girl in the miniskirt to record herself playing with the bat and have her send you the movie.

Yes, but it is because of this that you and I both have jobs.
