Is the Dell 2001FP still a good choice?

I use my computer 2 - 3 hours per day for web surfing and light Excel and Word work. No gaming. I have owned a 1901FP for the last few years and am quite happy with it. I want to start using it as a second monitor and buy a new 20 inch.

I have given a DELL 2001FP to my son as a Christmas gift and it is clearly nicer than my 1901FP. Is the 2001FP still a good choice?

For my type of "work" I prefer a standard monitor to a wide screen.
 
Yes, typing this on one, excellent monitor even today. Glad i went with it over the widescreen, for BF2 (one of the two games i play) does not support it🙁
 
Please. the 2001FP is an excellent monitor. At it's present price point, it's almost a no-brainer, if you like 4:3 aspect.
 
The 2001FP is still a good choice esp. when you use a coupon code to get it for $380ish. I didn't see any coupons for LCDs ( other than the $211 1704FP deal ). Keep Googling for Dell Coupons and decide on either the 2001FP or 2005FPW and decide whether you want to go widescreen or not. I have a 2001FP and just got a 2405FPW for $803.33 shipped with 33% off coupon code. It is absolutely fantastic for compiler work, Photoshop, Word, and Excel. My 6800GT has a little problem driving 1920 x 1200 plus bells & whistles for gaming, so I sometimes run a lower resolution in 1:1 pixel mode.

If you do decide to get the 2005FPW, you should be able to run 1280 x 1024 in 1:1 mode. Keep in mind that this mode will leave a sliver of black at the top and bottom and will be about equal to the size of a 17" full-screen monitor.

If it helps, the display size on the 2005FPW is around 10.625" tall x 17" wide. I don't have this panel, but I used a little geometry to come up with the numbers based on the 12.75" tall x 20.375" width of my 2405FPW.
 
2001FP is perfect for what you want to do with it , I had one for a few weeks but because it has very weak black levels (Worse than a lot of LCDs) It didnt work out for me as a gaming monitor. But browsing the web / forums etc. looked great on it.

I do think though that the 12MS panel in the 2005fpw is a better choice, than the 16MS panel in the 2001.

Even though BF2 doesn't look perfect, it's still enjoyable and playable at 1400x1050 for me on my 2005.

I dont notice any ghosting on my 2001 and i play(ed) several FPS on it. Does the image on the WS in BF2 stretched or does it just have blank space in there due to EA's laziness in coding?
 
For a few hundred more you can easily get a 2405FP. I'd pass on the 2001FP if you have the money. I have a 2001FP and I'd give it up in a heart beat for a 2405FP wide screen LCD.

To be fair...a few hundred dollars effectively doubles the price of hte purchase 🙂. You can squeeze a 2001FP under 4 bills atm. That said, I can't freaken WAIT to upgrade from a 2001FP to a 2405fp 🙂.
