Is The Da Vinci Code Overrated?

To elaborate: Yes, I thought the story was clever. However Dan Brown's writing style (a storyline constantly interrupted by pretentious history lessons, bland characterizations, etc.) completely ruined the book. Basically, I just find Dan Brown to be a poor writer.

I agree with EarthwormJim.

Nice quick read, enjoyable.

Not too crazy about the prospect of how much someone *didn't* like it though, that much is for sure.

It's an interesting read, but nothing more.

It also gets annoying how much Dan Brown writes down to you...he'll rephrase the implications of a "discovery" about a million times, just to make sure you got it, and he'll try to drag out a secret identity for looong after you've figured it out.

I think it stimulated a lot of discussion about religion. I think you'll be hard pressed to find a novel in history that stimulated more discussion. In that respect, the Da Vinci Code is not overrated.

<-- Has not read the book, and cannot vouch for it's actual literary quality.

Here's a question: had Dan Brown not specified which character was which, would you still be able to tell who was speaking? Because I sure as hell wouldn't.

It is one more selection of cheap fiction. Entertaining story but nothing earthshattering. I would equate it to a Grisham or Koontz novel.

Come on. Grisham is equally generic. Harry Potter FTW 😛

Harry Potter kicks the crap out of Dan Brown, from a purely literary standpoint. It's not even a comparison.

okay, saying the book is overated because the writer isn't that good of a writer is completely wrong. you obviously think the story itself is good, as does many people... but most people agree with you, including many authors, that Dan Brown is not a good author in terms of literary ability, and are surprised as how well the book sells even though its not written the best.

i have not read it yet, and not sure if I will now that I saw the movie. yes the book is different, but I have trouble reading a book after watching the movie. i am better able to read a book and then watch the movie.

Meh It was alright. It's not the kinda stuff that I usually read and I finished it, so that's one point for it.

I didn't like it much, but a lot of it is all the hype it's received. It was at least a very quick read. I'll take a Dashiel Hammett or Elmore Leonard novel anyday over a lot of the mystery/thriller writers out there.

No possible way is it overrated. Its a fascinating story. Debates of fact vs. fiction aside (which is most of the hype and hate), its one of the most interesting books I've read.

YEP. My mom guessed the ending within the first 50 pages. It's written like a freshman religion major's term paper.
Yo momma knows all the freshman religion majors! :Q

By anyone with a brain that reads REAL books with REAL plots and REAL characters The Davinci Code was rated as a juvenile piece of tripe. I found that to be very accurate.

So no, it was not overrated.
