Is the cable modem provided by cable company capped?

Hi all,

I am in Florence, SC and subscribe to RoadRunner.

I download from newgroups at about 245k and was wondering if i bought a new cable modem if my speed would increase.

I spoke to guy at time warner and he said the my cable modem is capped.

Anyone with info on this? or recommendation of good fast cable modem?

Thanks,
Todd

According to DOCSIS specifications, the caps are set through a configuration file in your modem. The config file though, is updated and checked for legitimacy by the ISP each time the modem is booted up.

It's easy to get caught for uncapping by some of the ISPs though some people do get away with it. The consequences are pretty harsh for a little amount of boost in bandwith...

Think about it. If you're speeds are already slow and not reaching the advertised limits (probably due to node saturation or some other slowdown elsewhere), what is raising the bandwith caps going to do? It's not going to give you more speeds because your ISP is already at its saturation point.

I just went through the comcast from @Home switch. @Home's policy was to cap the upload although for the first say year and a half of having the service (signed up June 2000), I was not capped and would see absurd speeds... 4-8Mbps down, and about 1.2 up depending on the time of day. Of course it slowly dropped over the years anyway even though there was no cap. I hit a low right before the switch of 250Kbps BANDWIDTH down... and had been capped on the upload about 2 months before the switch.

After the move to comcast, my upload is capped, and they cap the down at 1500... but I suspect that some in my area were not capped because my speed rose to 1000-1500 depending on time of day...

Anyway, when comcast first switched us, the customers with the Motorola Surfboard Modems were not capped at all.. at least down. I am not sure about up. Thoose with the standard modem from Comcast (Toshiba PCX1100) were.

There could be a brand of modem that your service has not capped yet... if there is, I bet it is a topic of discussion over at www.dslreports.com ... It is not all dsl anymore. They have unique forums for every broadband service available.

yeah comp625 is right the CMTS sends a TFTP file to modem setting all of the parameters.... you can tweak the file but once you do your a big nasty red flag in the equipment and face being kicked off the service outright(no more broadband if cables the only game) and or penaltys....

in the end it's not worth and a properly set up systems is practically immune to it...

but yes all the modems are capped.... in some way or another

SteelCityFan,

I'd LOVE to get the kind of connect speeds you got. I'm stuck with Adelphia, and while the reliability has improved since the @home cluster-hose, the connect speed hasn't. If I get 50kbs, I'm lucky. More typical is 30-40kbs. I'd have a nut if 1mb /sec or higher was available. 🙂

wooooooo I have adelphia and i get like 4Mbps down and 128 kbps up thats where im capped of at! where are you located at that you are recieving such slow speeds?

what are you talking about prolific9966

When I was on a Teryon/Shaw system about a year ago, I was getting 150KB upload. and yes, thats a capital B. In addition, I was getting unlimited IP's. The only draw back was about 20 more ping than people on the motorola systems, but the raw speed was pretty handy for transfering files. The only reason I am not using it now is becuse I moved to an area that is using motorla, so I switch to DSL

Then I could "test" to see if the uncapping method works 😉

any uncapping method out there right now is a myth. Any software that claims to do it might be a virus.

The only way to uncap your connection is make friends with someone who works at the cable company, and then, you still have the risk of being booted by your ISP

Dreddogg,

I live in south-central PA state. From reading people's complaints about Adelphia over at DSL reports, it appears that only certain areas of the country, namely, areas around Adelphia's HQ mostly, have high speed service.

I don't know where you live, but consider yourself blessed. I get slow service, and complaining to Cust service doesn't do any good - they say that they're getting more equipment, so hang in there, but I haven't seen any improvement. In the meantime, supposedly the owners keep putting more money into their HOCKEY team. Go figure.

BUT, I'm just outside of the radius that the local Sprint office can put DSL into (supposedly), so it's Adelphia, or Adelphia if I want broadband service at all. No real choices at all.

LOL you know I am only 15 mins. away from Buffalo!

ohh it's work and as i said you stand out like a sore thumb.....

just remember what your risking... criminal prosecution, denial of service, and one helluva fine.

downloading @ 245k...

Ha.. thats not enough?

i only get about 90 and that seems plenty fast...

don't risk it for a lil more bandwith..not worth it..

Mione is capped @ 1.5Mbps down 128Kbps up (cox express). I don't complain because I get these speeds even at peak time
