Is the BP oil spill a planet killer?

Oil leaked would not even fill the Superdome.

What . . . me worry?

nice find.
I wonder why the relief well(s) have to intersect so deep below the surface. Why not much closer to the top to divert the majority of the oil and then you (should) be able to cap the fucked up well hole.

Sounds counterintuitive...but I wonder if the pressure/speed of the oil escaping is lower at that depth than further up.

if they can drill relief wells, why can't they drill bomb wells? the fucking 'crush the pipe with an adjacent bomb' theory seems more plausible than any of the garbage they've come up with thus far.

even a simpleton would understand the risk in bombing something 30,000 ft underneath the ocean. What guarantee is their that they would A) hit the target B) not cause 100 more gushers of greater magnitude.

because the ocean floor is cracked and leaking oil. they are hoping to drill the wells below the cracks.

Interesting. Though they lost me at "The Government really needs to step in at this point and allow independent outsiders such as James Cameron assess the situation on the Gulf of Mexico sea floor."

While I know Cameron has a fair amount of experience in regards to working at depth is he really THE BEST out there in the field?"

Edit: However, I guess the cracks only explain the "cap the F'ed up hole" portion of my question/statement. Why do they have to drill so deep for the relief wells? Maybe it has to do with the pressure as vi_edit pointed out.

better geophysics, i would assume. the rock formation may be very good there for that sort of thing. plus if something goes wrong that far down it shouldn't have much affect on the surface.

Dumb question: Why aren't there any company filtering out the surface oil and selling it back to BP at twice the market value or something (enforced by the Obama)?

there's no guarantee that it would work (to the best of my knowledge, it's never been done that far underwater and near that heavily of a populated area) and if it failed, it could make the situation a lot worse.

to the OP... no, of course not. the vast majority of the planet will be unaffected by the oil spill.

That's the same program where people call in saying Bigfoot piloted a UFO that abducted people to take them to the Chupacabra planet so they could communicate with their psychic powers.

The pressure has to eventually "level out" to the same amount of pressure that's at the bottom of the ocean - correct? There has to be a limited amount of oil from that location [perhaps that's what BP is hoping for?]

Wait... there are people that think this could literally destroy the entire planet? Our planet, the same one that has held all this oil in the first place, is going to be destroyed by merely shifting the location of said oil? *sigh*

the Russians suggested we nuke it in the first week after it happened

easy to arm chair quarterback from across the globe. 'Yeah we never tried this anywhere important or 30k feet under the water but we think its a great idea for you to give it shot. '
