Is the book "Dune" good science fiction?

I like SF; however, when it becomes too much fantasy, I'm not into it. I can't stand the "Lord Of The Rings" which is not SF, but fantasy. Dune sounds interesting. Water being such a valuable resource mirrors our petroleum dilema. Trying to change the ecology of the planet from a dry arid climate to a lush tropical one. Will it kill the giant sandworms which produce the expensive drug which can produce a lucrative profit.

I bought the unabridged version on audiotape, sells for $44.00, I paid $3.00. Is it interesting?

Ancillary Data: I read the Cliff Notes online first because I'll be listening to it on tape and it might be a bit more complex than reading a book.

I agree. I haven't read his son's books though. After the first one, it gets stranger and not as good. I've read the series years ago, but I can't remember anything after the first...

I really enjoyed Dune. My dad isn't a big reader (he loves reading technical manuals and programming books) and Dune is the only fiction book he has ever enjoyed. He read for three days straight to finish it.

The rest of the original series gets really wierd and apart from the setting didn't have the same feel for me. I tried to read some of his son's books and didn't like them except the Butlerian Jihad trilogy. I thought that they were almost as good as the original Dune.

P.S. Don't watch the old 80's movie with Sting and 'Butt Chin' expecting to get an idea of what the book is like.

the first 2-3 books are great. they get progressively worse.

his sons books are pretty bad, but I think God Emperor and Charterhouse are worse.

I don't know if I'd like it on audio tape, but IMO, the original "Dune" is the best of the series. After the first one, they got pretty wierd.

It's been at least 20 years since I first read it, and have read it a couple of times since then. Each time, I pick out a few different twists and turns in the plot.

I tried to read it a few years ago. Maybe I didn't give it enough time, but I couldn't get past a few chapters because I got lost in the weird names.

Yes, I agree. On tape it might be strange.

Can someone recommend a good version of the movie "Dune" to see after listening to the 34 hours of audio tape?

I thought that might make it difficult which is why I read the Cliffs first.

Hardly.

Still great books though

Didn't Herbert directly state that water (as well as melange) was a metaphor for oil in an interview?

Dune is mainly about politics, plots and intrigue.

if you have the book, read through the definitions in the back of the book first to make it easier to understand the new terms and words Herbert used in the book.

IMHO, the first Dune movie is more like cliffnotes to the book and so far there hasn't been a movie/miniseries that has done it justice.

I'm still hoping they will make a movie of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
