If anyone out there has a BFG 6800GT OC card, can you tell me if the card is loud during both idle periods and during videogame playing (e.g. Doom3)? I have a small apartment and am trying to keep things quiet to maintain my sanity.

Well "loud" is a pretty relitive concept, but I dont consider mine loud by any means.

I have a really quite computer that I built specifically to be silent, and I would like to keep it that way if possible. I bought most of the components from silentpcreview.com (Antec Sonata case, Zalman 7000 cpu heatsink, etc.). My current videocard, an old nvidia 4200 2x agp, is ok with respect to noise.

If you're looking for performance, go ahead and buy it.

If its too loud for your tastes, do as AyashiKaibutsu suggested, purchase the Arctic Cooling Silencer on it.

Mines about 25% louder than my 9700 pro and if you are looking for silence you are going to need to mod it with a quieter heatsink.

You can use an arctic cooler silencer or the evga copper heatsink if you want to keep your pc silent.

It isn't LOUD, it can be a little noisy during a heavy gaming session but I can't really hear it over the game. Otherwise, if it is too noisy for you at idle, get the arctic silencer but I don't think you will go insane with this card in your comp.

You wont hear over your sonata's exhaust fan... atleast I dont. Unless you have a stethoscope attatched:)

I think the eVGA copper cooler is just the heatsink insert for the nVidia reference cooler. You have to have the standard fan enclosure to use it. I don't think this is an option for the BFG sink. I'm guessing with a username like shuttleboi, the the OP probably has a SFF case, which may present a problem for the dual slot NV Silencer 5. I'm not sure what options he has for a truely silent, single slot 6800GT. These things are just huge, power hungry, and put off a lot of heat. The reference design cooler isn't loud by my standards, but my PC is certainly not what would be considered "silent".

Yea, my mistake, the evga one still requires the reference fan.

I have a geforce galaxy glacier 6800GT (comes with nv silencer on). I have a quiet setup with a modded sonata (3 120mm fans, acoustipack lining), zalman 7000 sink, etc. All the 120mm fans run at pretty low rpm, zalman runs flat out. The nv silenced gt is the loudest thing in my case (well has the most noticable noise anyway as the other fans only emit a low hum). However unless you're fanatical about noise it's not too bad.

2x 80mm in case, I can't discern that it got any louder when adding the 6800 GT (upgrade from a 9800 pro, comparable in noise if not quieter)

:Q You really mean that a BFG card noise would "blend" correctly in the noise of a Sonata case? (well, I mean; not ruin the relative "silence" of the system?"
Do someone has an advice on this?

if so; i'll forget to buy the MSI (the MSI 6800gt is totally unavailable... backordered everywhere ) and buy the easily available (and OCed) BFG... bundled with doom3 anyway.

I actually felt the 9800Pro was louder than my GT, so much so that I put a Silencer on it, then eventually sold it and replaced it with a fanless 5200. There were other things that were different between the two boxes, like the 9800 had an 80 and 120mm low voltage fans versus 5 80mm low voltages fans in the GT system, and the 9800 system had that loud as heck Abit OTES cooling system, but I'm not even sure I've ever heard the GT, even when benchmarking. But I've heard the 9800.
