is the Antec power supply compatible

s the Antec power supply compatible with the MSI K8NGM2-FID ? I ask this question because i have been reading about how some of the Antec NEO HE models are not compatible wih the ASUS A8N VM CSM and other model in the ASUS A8N series.

thanks. been reading about all the heartache with ASUS a8n series of motherboards and power supplies, and read another one today about how some of the asus manuals are incorrect about how to set the switch for two video cards on the deluxe. Gees.

anyway. had to make a decision to buy new mother board from msi or new power supply that may or may not work with my hopefully replacement ASUs a8n-vm fid board.

Think the simpler thing to do is buy the new board from msi. I have the antec smart power 400 watt. Went over to Fry electronic and purchased what you have . would not start the mother board. so i returned it.

alas, the neoHE 430 that acme with my antec p150 case won't post with the MSI board. I got a different psu and no problem. renethx, who seems to know this board better than anyone else, has two rigs that work. one person on this poll

I guess you can try. but if you DON'T already have a neoHE, maybe you should think about buying something else. why court trouble? just my 2c.

Actually three systems with K8NGM2-FID + NeoHE 430 are running fine without a tiny problem in my home (one is not mine). But contrary to my experience, pctwo and two other guys in SPCR Forum (jfreuler, barth2k) reported problems...

Still have my antec sp 400 watt that came with my tx 640 b mini tower case. so i will see how that works for m . will post when i get all the parts put together.

I really would like to have a more engery effecifent power supply, but wise thing seems to be wait a while.year or so. Just gets so warm in my office with everything running i do all i can to cut down on room temp.

Enermax Liberty ELT400/500AWT is a good alternative to NeoHE. There is a good review in SPCR. "The high efficiency and active PFC help keep the Liberty environmentally friendly."

renethx: I have same cpu, memory, and cooler as your rig #1 but so far only get it dual prime stable @2200mhz. Do you mind posting your settings? Yeah I know it won't be the same but I'm curious

Right now I am using BIOS v3.00 (but I got the same overclocking results with v3.13). The differences from the default settings are:

Advanced Chipset Features

• Memclock Mode [Limit]
  • Memclock Value [166 MHz]
• User Config Mode [Manual]
  • CMD-ADDR Timing Mode [1T]
• CPU to NB Frequency [1000 MHz]
• NB to SB Frequency [800 MHz] (this can be changed to [1000 MHz] for v3.13)
• CPU to NB Linkwidth [16 down, 16 up]
• NB to SB Linkwidth [8 down, 8 up] (this can be changed to [16 down, 16 up] for v3.13)
• CPU-LDT Frequency, MHz [248] ([236] for the second rig)

That's all. Lowering "Memclock Value" to [166 MHz] is essentially important. The stable "CPU-LDT Frequency" depenends on each CPU. If you have bad luck, your max CPU-LDT Frequency may be [220].

Lowering CMD-ADDR Timing Mode (to [2T]), CPU to NB Frequency, NB to SB Frequency, CPU to NB Linkwidth, NB to SB Linkwidth could be helpful to make the system stabler with only a little performance decrease. Also try increase DDR voltage to 2.60 - 2.70. Don't raise it too high, that will damage your value RAM.

Enermax wow. looked the liberty series up on new egg. good reviews. thanks i can see where i will look for replacement power supplies.

got my xfx 6600 GT in a short while ago. see they dont use that huge X shaped box any more. Good. get a $20 rebated so kinda makes up for returning the xfx 6600 . still think i messed up returning the first card. i like the idea of 256 meg of memory rather than 128. Just tired of messing around with trying to get one stinking machine to run correctly. will be my wifes machine and i get glared at every day. She likes her monitors set up in portait mode. Not only do they fit better on her desk but it is like looking at a legal sheets of paper . times three. Not sure what is wrong with her current socket A machine but no matter which agp video board i put in that thing i can not rotate the screens for portiat mode. It sure would have been cheaper to just purchased a few more video cards for that old machine. I just wanted the excuse to start upgrading. Now I need to find a way to blow up this one my trusty asus P4C800 deluxe. chuckles



One final thougth, I looked at www.outpost.com eg fry's electronic which is 26 miles away. They dont carry the high efficency Emermax . Shame, most of the stuff that i find i want is only available with online retailers. Going to Fry's is nice because they have a 30 day full refund on motherboards and 15 day full refund on memory and processors, with out a lot of questions.

Thanks i will check them out . I plan on using the antec smart power that i have for a trial, after i check the voltages. doing all my testing on a table rather than in a case. much easier to check and mess around that trying to work inside of a case.

I'm looking at the pin definition for the 24 power connector in MSI's manual and I sure don't see any -5V pin. MSI tech told me by email the board doesn't require it. I forwarded this to antec and they replied by closing the trouble ticket. "To improve system performance we are closing your Support Ticket." What the heck?

renethx does your neohe have a -5v? are you using any extra connector or adapter to get the neohe working with this board, or is this antec tech just blowing me off?

sure glad to read advice and experiences from you and renethx. I am going to try my basic antec smart power 400 watter. and it that does not do the trick I will order the Emermex suggested by rementhx


I have heard that antec rma process is the pits. something about unsing fax machines and stuff. I really like having fry's electronic store so close. easy to ruturn for first thirty days. Remathx also suggested using buy.com for easy returns.

anyway i read the manual and i dont see a negitive 5 volt line. what i do see are instructions how to use the 20 pin plug on this board . thats interesting. might be ok if only using onboard video.

No, it doesn't have -5V. -5V was removed from ATX V2.0. Clearly Antec Tech Support blowed you off. There are several choices.

1. Antec representative (user name: AntecRep) is watching SPCR Forum. He (or she) accepts PM. PM'ing him and tell him your situation. AntecRep is minding what Forum members say.

If this does not work, reveal the stupid reply from Antech Tech Support and how badly AntecRep denied your request of RMA in SPCR Forum. (Antec NeoHE "High-Efficiency" is the right place to post your message.) Then:

2. Buy NeoHE 430 from Buy.com. Try it with the MSI board. If it works, ... (guess the rest).

3. If the new NeoHE does not work, return it as defective. Sell your NeoHE 430 at eBay and buy another PSU, such as Enermax Liberty.

4. Keep your NeoHE and use it in your future system two years later.

Fry's IMHO has awful customer service (there's always like 50 ppl standing around at the front and there's never anyone around to help) and returning stuff involves a 3 or 4 step process. Luckily for them, they carry a lot of parts that I can't get at CompUSA or the like otherwise I wouldn't bother with them.

what a plearsure. I thought about sellimg my ASUS a8n vm csm on ebay, but i cant be that mean to whoever wound up with it. so to the garage it goes. some day when i move i will trash it.
