Is the AMD FX-55 Chip worth it at all?

Yes they do, they are dual core and overclock extremely well.

It's worth it if you already have an AMD mainboard and DDR Ram and can't afford to buy all new parts for a Core 2 Duo system (DDR2 memory is very expensive right now). It overclocks well and should carry you over for another year or so .......... unless you "need" a dual core processor to run your apps. If that's the case then yes, you should go ahead and make the transistion.

Looking at your rig, which doesnt seem to tell me what processor you have, an FX-55 would be a good way to go if you want more processing power now, for cheap, seeing as you are already on 939....

His mainboard is not a socket 939 it's a 754 so he would have to buy a new mainboard anyway if he buys an FX55. That being the case he might as well go ahead and get a Core 2 Duo mainboard and processor. Only problem is Ram ..... DDR2 is extremely expensive right now. He's bot a GB of OCZ PC3200 so he could get by cheaper buying an inexpensive nForce4 mainboard and the FX55 for $139 at Newegg.
Is hard to say what he should do ..... depends mostly on his finances.

I just updated my Rig. I went with the FX-55 and the DFI-Ultra-D. I'll probably upgrade to the Core2duo later on. Thanks for the comments.

Any reason why you went for the FX55 instead of, let's say, an X2 4200+? You could have gone for a cheaper mobo if your budget didn't allow you to get the DFI and an X2...

If you do a lot of multitasking, you'd be better off seeing how much cash you could get for that FX-55 and picking up a dual core chip, like a 4400+, 4800+ or Opteron (165/170/175).

If your primary usage is gaming and not so much on the multitasking, then the FX-55 is still a pretty decent chip. Especially if you overclock :).

The only multitasking I do is have multiple windows open like Firefox and Winamp. Otherwise I mostly play games on my pc.

Do you think it would be better if I sold the fx and got an x2 instead?

I pretty much only play cs:s, surf the internet and watch movies/tv shows from my computer. I originally had an Opteron 165 (oc'ed to 2.56Ghz), and I bought the FX-55. I don't notice any difference in apps or movies, but for gaming I definately see a big fps gain when I switched to the fx-55. I pretty much upgraded my cpu and will have made some money in the process (I can get ridda the Opty 165 for the $140 pretty easy).

I'll prolly try the fx-55 for a while then. Once the core2duos come down in price and ddr2 ram, then I'll switch over.
