Is the a new Graphics card worth it...

So I had a 9800pro, but i was able to sell it for what i paid for it to my buddy, so i figured i probably should...

I installed doom last night and with my 512 geil golden dragon pc 3200 ram, with 64 mb set asside for my onbard Geforce4, i was able to run doom on the lowest setting possible.

I just ordered a gig of hyperx 2700 ram, and i with it i can set my onboard video to be a 128mb interface, with what ever left as my systems use... Will i notice any performance increase, that is to ask: Will i be able to run Doom 3 with much better settings.

I am trying to justify not buying a 6800gt right now, but being a dedicated gamer for years...this is very hard to do...

Can someone reasure me so I can keep feeding myself... :p

Oh god, i can't tell you how much performance you will gain from a 6800 GT..

Overclock it to Ultra speeds and you have one HELL of a card..

Tell me when you can run

1600x1200
Ultra Quality
2x AA

@ 58 FPS..

:D

Not to mention every other game out also.

as a fellow ATer (i think it was BFG10K, not sure) once said, dont buy a card based soley on the modding potential. Get the 6800GT, its the superior card, just do a search on it. It has DX9C support, onboard video encoding chip, check out how it does in doom3, when compared to the x800XT PE.

Doom 3 doesn't exactly have stellar replay value, I'm not sure why everyone thinks they need a new card for a game they'll play through once or twice and be done with it. In fact the second time I'll play through it will be when I've actually had a good reason to get a next gen card and the super pretty Doom 3 Ultra graphics will just be a bonus to look at sometime later down the road.

That's rediculous, just buy a 6800, or a 6800 GT. For a NO HASSLE experience.

it's just a bios flash how hard can it be! plus by enabling the extra pipelines the card will match and beat the GT in other games for the same price!

Edit: man I'm so tired

That's great, but the XTPE simply crushes the GT in the majority of games out there. And the mod supposedly has a 100% success rate.

To the OP: X800 Pro vivos are currently available for $440. If you can find a 6800 GT for $400 including tax that's comparable, but most places are gouging.

Are you seriously pimping Ultrashadow technology? And SM3 is still a gimmick.

Well to all those that care...I know that my option will be the 6800GT...

But i can't justify paying 350 for the card...so can i settle with 800x600 res...with medium graphics...

I guess i will find out tomorrow and make my post...Thanks all

you will not get a playable framerate with 800x600 resolution and medium details with onboard mx440...sorry to bust your bubble...

Because Quake 4 is based on the doom 3 engine.

And dozens of other games... coming soon.

Yes, COMING SOON (but when is "soon"?). They're not out yet, and by the time they're out, today's top end cards will be mid-range cards, and there will be even faster cards out for the same price that these cards are today.

so spend $200 on a card today and $200 on a card later on down the road upgrade 2x for the price of 1 400 dollar upgrade. The 6800 or any $400+card just doesn't make sense to me at this point in my life.

Of course if I had mad wealth and no girlfriend (hell if I just didn't have a gf ) I would probably pick one of these 6800s up.

seriously, overpriced IMHO. And they're not THAT much faster IMHO. Plus they're usually annoyingly loud and eat a lot of power.

Hey Bradleylicious,

HardOCP & Id have a hardware guide -
Official Doom 3 Hardware Guide

They claim that it's very playable even on a GeForce MX 400 - key word being PLAYABLE. However you will have to disable many of the special effects. It really depends on what kind of experience you're looking for.

So if I buy a new 6800 to play Doom3, and finish Doom3, should I then sell my 6800 and buy back my old 5900? Of course not! I'm going to keep the 6800 because I know it can handle any game out there easily. I know I dont buy video cards to play one game. I buy it to play everything I own better and to be ready for anything new that comes down the pike.

If you can continue to pimp ATI, don't knock down anyone else who pimps what they like.

No, you will have poor D3 gameplay, and have 300 dollars that you already had.

All the cards are good. Jeez the only game so far that really favours one or the other is DIII. So either card will do just fine.

While i agree somewhat..

My 6800 GT @ Ultra is pretty much double the speed of an 9800 Pro and XT..

I got mine for 319 + tax... - $80 when i sold my Radeon 9500 Pro..

:D

Can't beat that.
