Is the 24" Dell LCD really worth $600 more than the 20"?

As i embark on my journey of parting out my PC and moving to the realm of apple, i am stuck on which monitor i want to use with the new system...

I currently have two 17" Dell 1703fp's and the new computer will only support one monitor, so i am either going for the Dell 2005 or 2405.

Advantages of the 2405 (for me):
1) Larger Screen (for side by side document work)
2) HDTV capability via Component (which i would love, but i would probably get more work done w/o a tv in here)

Advantages of 2005:
1) Price
2) Price
3) Still larger than my 1703
4) Price

Is it really worth $600 more for a 4" larger screen and component inputs?
Would viewing two documents side by side be feesable on a 2005?

Worth $600 more than the 20"? Not in my opinion, no. But if they still had that deal on the 24" monitor for $860, then I'd definitely go for it (well, assuming I had the money :p)

Absolutely not. I own both and regret the premium I paid.

Screen size is excessive enough that 20" is all you need....especially at the great price.

It was ~$860 when the Dell 2405FPW came out. That was only a couple of weeks after I paid $520 for the Dell 2001FP. I would have paid $860 for it if I didn't already have the 2001FP and not have the hassle of returning it and all that stuff..

Well, if you need two documents side by side, you'd be best off getting two 2005s. They'd be cheaper in a good deal as well (routinely fall below $500, and even hit below $350 a little while back).

I absolutely loved my 2405 while I had it, best monitor I've ever seen personally. I liked it better than a 2001 and 2005 in a dual setup, but I'm not a dual monitor person myself and the extra space for watching movies and playing games was worth it to me.

I think though, that getting dual 2005s would be better for you though.

Crap just reread your post. Um I still don't think a 2405 would be worth it for you. If work/business has a higher priority than entertainment than the 2005 will be better for you.

School is actually the priority currently.

When i have 25 page papers to write and lexis nexis can be in one window while my document in the other, it saves me a hell of alot of time.

i'd say setup dualies...2001fp...more real estate than 2005fpw as mentioed earlier.
and INSTEAD of paying 600 dollars for an extra 4 INCH...why not pay that money to get an extra 20 INCH..just do the math...yea it means you have to lug around 2 lcds...big deal...they are what...like 20ish lbs?...not even i think...

Nope. 2005FPW is fine monitor and I can't justify spending even $860 on 2405FPW when I can get 2005FPW for less than $345.

Mac Mini and 2005FPW would make for great combo IMO. Very clean and very elegant with plenty of screen and desk space.

Now if 2005FPW was in the $500 something range, I would say premium on 2405FPW is worth it.

I'd much rather have dual monitors, so skip the mini and use something that supports 2. Or if you must use a mini and only 1 monitor, then what is the real estate worth to you?

Well I have a 23" Sony LCD same res as the dell. I had this problem about 2 years ago. I could get 2x 19" at the time.

Movies on a 23" with no dam line in the middle is MUCH better...two documents side by side is REALLY useufl. A dual display would be just as good.

Only advantage of one single big screen is for movies and gaming.

1680x1050 = you will just about get 2 side by side.

I run 1920x1200 and I can fit 2 documents side by side with my msn on the right handside also.

You will manage but not have extra space on the righ hand side.

Get two of them if you want more real work. Or get a cheapo 17".

I've no problem having two documents side by side with 2005. Definitely superior to 2001 in this respect.

It takes effor to squeeze two documents side by side on the 2005FPW

However I would agree that that price premuim for 4 more inches is stupid

My solution? Buy TWO 2005FPWs in case I ever go dual monitor. As of right now each one is running on a seperate Shuttle system
