i recommend learning on a VW jetta, they are cars for girls (in my opinion) and so therefore they are very easy to drive manually and theres a lot of room for error, its really hard to pop the clutch out and stall the car

That's a long way of saying you don't know how to drive a stick isn't it? :)

Really though sticks are better for most people because:

1) Cheaper than auto
2) Better on gas
3) More performance.

None of these three factors are all that significant most of the time but combined together for a lot of people it makes sense to get a stick. Also the fact that many people find it more fun.

It's fun once you learn stick you can tourment the auto users by saying how good it is and it is good. I.E. I would tourment my friend who has a auto Camero (uhg American) by asking him to race against my Civic. Of course we never did and if we did I would lose but since I knew we would never race it was nice to give him the impression that with the manual civic I could win.

There is also a control factor of you being able to do basically anything you want to do.

Also I think that most people who drive sticks also will start to learn more about cars since driving is fun and you will learn the limits of how much you can push the car.

After having driven stick shift for some years on quite a few cars I can say: It SUCKS!
(oh, and yeah I would probably leave everybody on this board who is claiming how good he is at stick shift far behind me!)

1. Eats your gas like there is no tomorrow (it's a fvcking MYTH that stick shift saves gas ... why do all the 3.0 Litres [and less] cars in Europe have an automatic transmission, uhhh? GET IT?)
2. It's annoying like hell (I rather feel up the lucky female next to me than that stupid stick, I guess if you are a homo .... )
3. I like leaving EVERYBODY with a stick shift far behind me when I'm driving automatic :D
...

Stick shift? Avoid it if you can!

1) What's europe got to do with driving here? There are actually more stick shifts in europe per capita than there are here. And european 3.0 liters? They have enough power that they can suffer the loss of power they get with an auto. Fact is that unless you have a CVT transmission the auto gets less gas milage. That's quite indesputable.

2) Yes it's annoying in traffic.

3) Uh whatever!

Now in the UK its the other way round you only learn to drive a manual gearbox (stick shift) because you can then drive a auto as well -- but if you learn to drive a auto then you are not permitted to drive a stick unless you take another est to drive a manual....

auto shift is for lazy people that havent the brain capacity to drive and think :)

ok me off now

2: True
3: 700R4, C4, C4, 727, TH400, and ofcoarse the World known, POWERGLIDE These are AUTO's found in some of the fastest DOT legal cars. It's all about application

Not hard at all. But all these testosterone emitting people thinking they're cool for driving stick are funny.

Skoorb, it's like Doggiedog said, "Learn how to drive stick on the hills of San Francisco. That'll be hard." Voila, I can clutch, double clutch, drive in reverse, parallel park and shift without the clutch owing to my ass stounding mechanical aptitude, and except for double clutching and shifting without the clutch, I can do it practically perpendicular. When the cable car cable breaks while you're trying to parallel park and starts rolling backward at you, the pucker factor really speeds up the learning process. The wonderful thing about the automatic is that it makes those hills easy. Care for an espresso.

2) Better on gas

[sarcasm] Yeah, right! THAT's why every major automaker on this planet builds his low-fuel-consumption cars [eg. the 3.0 Liter autos in Europe that use 3.0 litres of fuel for 100 kilometres or the new VW 1.0 litre car] with automatic transmission ...

I have driven stick shift it uses MORE gas than automatic even while driving LESS agressively!!!

but go on believe this stupid myth!

all you need is a good teacher... to teach you the basics.
and within a week of driving... you'll be one with the car. :)

Maybe you aren't shifting efficiently? I have a manual 2002 Civic LX. I know at least 4 other people who have automatics. I get 34-35, they all tell me they get around 30.
What's the deal? Same car, same trim level. Hellz, I even drive with the windows rolled down and I have the factory "spoiler" to give me a little extra drag on the highway.

Anyway, shifting isn't hard. I agree with LAUST's opinion, that if it takes you any extra "thought" to do it, you should probably stick to automatic.

anyone ever skip gears? like rev it a lot in 3rd and go right to 5th..hehe, is that bad for the engine/transmission?

also stick shift can save your life, if you're stranded with a dead battery somewhere u can "kick start" your car...surpised no one, at least, i think, didnt mention that also

Sorry but you're still wrong. Like I said unless you have a CVT you're almost sure to get worse gas milage in an auto car. Those low fuel consumption cars use CVT auto transmissions which can get better mileage and better power than a standard.

But, for the VAST majority of cars - basically anything you see on the road these days - the standard gets better gas milage and it's performance is higher.

Like laust said it's application. A lot of drag cars are autos. But I don't drive those in the city. Pick the average car and the auto is both slower and worse on gas mileage measurably than the standard. If you don't believe me look to the manufacturer's website or any magazine with numbers. It's not a "myth". It's a fact.

I often go from 3rd to 5th :)

What planet do you live on?

1. It will eat more gas if you redline every shift (obviously not an option with an auto)
2. I can't even figure out what to say to your strange annoying/homo/stick connection. I think you have some issues you need to work out.
3. Riiiiiiiight. Given two cars identical cars (one auto, one stick) the stick will dust the auto since you can rev it to where it actually develops some power. Of course, if you pit an auto corvette against a stick chevette we all know who'll win.
rolleye.gif

Anywho. A stick is fun if you're a driving enthusiast at all since you have more control over the car in many ways....you can dictate the revs, take advantage of engine braking, etc. However, if you spend the majority of you time in stop-n-go traffic (especially in hilly areas, as previously pointed out) it is a titanic PITA.

Not especially hard to learn tho (to answer your original question). Takes 15 min or so to get the basics and a few weeks of driving to where it becomes second nature. You'll stall it a few times and occasionally forget what gear you're in....just the way it is.:)

Manual is the only way to go.
I had an automatic for a while, and although I loved the car, I hated the transmission (and the transmission hated me)

So you kill the engine once in a while... Big deal. Still happens to me after 10 years of manual shifting, well once a year or so.

Once you get the car going, all your troubles are gone. So just practice getting the car going. Practice getting the car going with the hand brake. (You will need that when driving away uphill)

Edit: anyone ever skip gears? like rev it a lot in 3rd and go right to 5th..hehe, is that bad for the engine/transmission?
Only on the way down, never on the way up. I don't like to rev the car that much.
Is it bad for the trans? No. Is it bad for the engine? Can be.
Bad for trans: Putting a gear in without having the clutch fully depressed (nice grinding noise). Bad for clutch: letting it heat up and burn a bit (formula 1 racing cars used to have high clutch fatalities at the start).

3rd to 5th is good yeah! I like 5th to 3rd better, downshifting is more fun as far as I'm concerned.

For those saying that ...

It isn't hard, it's just stupid. Stick is a throwback to the dark ages of automobile design before anybody could figure out how to make an efficient automatic. It's like grinding flankstake instead of buying hamburger. It's like ironing a shirt instead of buying wash and ware. And while you're developing a blister and premature heart disease, the guy in the nest car is fondeling his, his ...his coffee espresso. You'd love to give him the finger, but you'd kill the engine.

-Driving stick in rain and snow is much safer (more control) .. (someone mentioned engine breaking)
-it's more fun because you're actually controlling the car .. you're more integrated with your machine, if you don't care about this then fine, personal preference. I like to feel that the car is an augmentation to my body .. like a glove.
-You can get faster shifts .. auto's lag, even the tiptronic girly bidness

The two people who are so outspokenely opposed to manual .... you are rabid! You actually hate manual and people who drive it .. your nothing but rabid, hateful fascists ... seek therapy.

Manuelku:
Learning to drive stick is easy .. but don't think you've learned it right until you can downshift properly. Anyone can make the car get from A to B .. but driving stick is all about control ..
Go to a parking lot and learn 1st .. after 1st the rest of the gearbox is easy. 1st is the touchiest .. as is reverse, of course.
Go learn and enjoy .. you'll see how many more options you have when driving a sports car when it's manual. Try driving sideways in an auto .. :) (rally style, good luck)

when ever i hire a car in the usa its sooo boring having auto i like to make the car work for me the way i want it to i wanna change gear when i want to *when the rev counter is in the red lol * not put it in drive and go wheres the fun in that ....

now u gunna pick on me again ???? :D because me gunna tell my mommy lol :)

remember i am 120 years old sonny ;)
